    September Tip - Crank Baits

If your like me you have a few crank baits. Ok more than a few...

I try to keep them divided into seperate boxes, Topwater, Shallow (1 to 6 ft), Mid (7 to 12 ft) and Deep ( >12 ft). This works great except the various baits may have slightly different depth ranges, or when you have crank baits that have been modified and are tuned for specific depths.

I like to take a red Ultra-Sharpie and write the depth range on the belly of the bait. If the depth is specific to a line size I write that also. The red Sharpie writing cant be seen below about 4 ft and it seems to last almost forever.

This saves a lot of time on the water since I dont have to sit there scratching my head trying to remember the depth range or try and figure it out from the lip.

Why not write it down both sides since the red color will only make it look like a bleeding bait? Fish can't read so it's not like they'll know it's writing and not blood...

i take and put the depth on mine but i go one step further and also put the color pattern on the bottom of the bait as well
like mos i am a crankbait freak and have tons of them and some of the color patterns get hard to rembember what they are after they have been in the box for a while

Me too, there are many a GOLF Ball in the woods, with a Red Sharpie line on it as a mark.

Then I pretty much gave up golf and got back into fishing, thought I would save money
