    3.0L Trim issues

On the way back to the boat ramp, I trimmed down for take-off, and it almost went all the way down and stopped...never moved again...either way. Once I got home, I swapped all the trim relays around, with no success. Btw, I could feel and hear them click, when I hit the switch........ ideas?

Could be your trim motor has crapped out on you. Have you tried tapping on it very lightly to see if you can get it to work. If so then your trim motor needs replaced. There is a test you can do hopefully Don will be along shortly.

    Hopefully it is something simple.

You might check the trim fluid also. You would have to loosen the screw on the side of the motor to raise the engine manually to get to the yellow fill screw.

    Re: 3.0L Trim issues (06champ198)

I had to change mine out about a year ago, and this weekend I noticed a little smoke from the motor when I trimmed it up. I disconnected the battery and removed the top lid off the motor and it had water in it. I guess I will order me a new one or get a rebuild kit. It looks fairly simple to rebuild. Don will line you out, and maybe tell me what rebuild kit I need. Also maybe Don can tell me why my trim has always sounded weak since I have owned it. Even when I installed the new motor last year it just sounds bad. My buddy has a 2003 250xs and his sounds totally different,I have checked the fluid level several times and it is always full. My motor is a 2004 250xs serial# ot819582

Same thing happened to my 250 Pro XS this year. Needed a new trim motor under warranty.

Here's the "simple" test for the 2-wire trim motor (since there are several of you here that sound like you need it)

-Locate the two-wire harness for the trim motor coming into the engine cowling. Somewhere near (often below) the relays, there is a bullet connector in each of the wires. DISCONNECT both wires at this bullet connection.

-Hold one wire to a good ground (the aluminum intake plenum is a handy, clean grounding point)

-Firmly touch the other wire to battery POSITIVE power (starter solenoid positive post is a good point for this connection). The trim motor should run, moving the trim in one direction.

-Reverse the wires (reversing the polarity). The trim should now run in the OPPOSITE direction.

If your results match (and the trim functions normally), the trim motor is likely good (and the problem may be a connection, relays, or switch).

If your results do NOT match the above- you likely have a bad trim motor.

A newer design trim motor kit is now available (and we usually have one of these in stock).

I bought my last one from http://www.pitstopmarine.com (very good pricing on parts). But I think API will sell the parts to rebuild these motors. They are very simple.

Re: 3.0L Trim issues (FL Dell)

There are a lot of trim motor failures on the XS motors, very common.
I wish Mercury would come up with a better quality supplier, or a design change to fix this problem.

Thank you John, seems like coils, compressors, and trim units are the three to look out for.
