Mercury doesn't use "year models". So the only way to ACCURATELY identify a particular engine is to have it's SERIAL NUMBER.![]()
This may account for some of the confusion on "pre-2006" ProXS engines.
The 225 ProXS usually puts out an average Dyno HP of approximately 247 at the propshaft.
Differences in the engines include (but aren't necessarily limited to):
-Reeds
-Air Compressor
-Fuel Rails
-Direct Injectors
-Spark Plugs
-Cylinder Heads
-Porting
-PCM Calibration
-Mounts
-Gearcase (many came with the Torquemaster)
-Ignition System (depending on model)
The ProXS will produce a better holeshot, better mid-range punch, and stronger top end. It's based on well-tested RACE ENGINE designs.![]()

Thanks, so it sounds like the Pro XS is an overall better performance motor, Thats what I wanted to hear. As for needing to find out about the motors though serial numbers, I was very interested in a motor for sale here on BBC, the cowling says Pro XS but when I ran the serial number is was just an opti 225.
