    Overheating - 2006 225 Pro XS

I am experiencing a consistant problem with over heating when restarting. If I restart in less tha 30 minutes after stopping to fish the temp alarm sounds and the smart guage temp reads between 175 and 190 before dropping below 155 when the alarm quits. This has been going on for 4 years with numerous trips to the dealer and a new water pump, which I agreed to pay for but did not help. Each time the dealer says they tested it and nothing is wrong.

I idle for at least a minute after each run, tilting the motor down or up makes no difference and it occurs in warm or cool water condtions.

Any advice before the warranty runs out?

If the water pump, thermostats and poppet valve are all verified to be good.... I'd be pulling the powerhead and adapter plate gaskets (likely has a damaged gasket).

    Re: Overheating - 2006 225 Pro XS (Basser1OH)

I have had the EXACT same issue for the past four years. The latest "fix" per Merc's direction was replacement of the poppet valve. However, I had this done in May and was prepping the rig for a trip and used muffs to idle the eingine in the driveway just to check things over (this requries taping the low water intake also). While doing this, I noticed water collecting in the cowling on the starboard side. Long story short, trip was cancelled and rig went back to the wrench. It needed the adapter plate gasket replaced as noted above. So far so good. Also, this was covered under warranty.

The problem is mine was very inconsistant in terms of occurance. It wouldn't overheat for a month or two and then it wold overheat on re-start three or four times in a row. This has been very frustrating but I think the issue is now solved.

Have your mechanic check the gasket for leakage. I don't know how long this was going on. I just happend to notice it by luck.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll let you know how it goes with the dealer.

One more thing to note on the powerhead and adapter plate gasket: Unless the gasket is blown "externally" (where the tech can visually see leakage), most are hesitant to remove the powerhead and go on an "investigative mission".

As much as we all hate to keep hammering at a problem with the same facility, this particular scenario is one where it's in your BENEFIT to have done so. The tech can then explain that the engine has a HISTORY of overheating problems, what has been replaced/addressed, and is FAR more likely to be given instructions to pull the powerhead/adapter plate for inspection, based on the "history".

Re: Overheating - 2006 225 Pro XS (EuropeanAM)

I am gettting an overheat on restart about 1 time per year on this same motor. It seems like the 2006 pro XS is the one mentioned on here the most. Its interesting that an adapter plate gasket between the powerhead and the mid section is a possibility. I will probably wait until my overheat problem becomes more consistent before I tear into it. I've already eliminated the thermostats, poppet, and water pump.

The newer-style powerhead and adapter plate gaskets are definitely improved (and much less proned to such problems).
