    Surging 250 pro xs

I have a 250 pro xs purchased in Sept 09. The problem I'm having is it's surging at speed. It is especially noticable at WOT. It has 70 hours. It's like it's hitting the limiter but I've never reached 6000 RPM. It's like the motor can't run at a steady pace or has more but something is stopping the process. All mantinence has been done on schedule. My mechanic has also changed spark plugs and run a decarbonizer through the engine. Also recomended high octane fuel but no fix!

Today I was told about a ECM flashing that would fix this? Can anyone help!

Re: Surging 250 pro xs (NELACAT)

Can you provide the "calibration number" from the side of the PCM?

It should be on a label at the top of the unit (readable when standing next to the engine).... and may begin with: "8M......."

Re: Surging 250 pro xs (EuropeanAM)

Sir, thank you for the reply. I'm unable to raise the calon off the engine due to a severe back issue. So I go to my dealer with the intention of getting this info.

Low and behold! "Merc is sending me another PCM to address this WOT surging." They actually wanted mine but my Dealer told them I couldn't do without.

Their now seems to be a code for low and high speed surging. Dealer said this high speed code is new for isolated cases?

I will let you know if this fixes my WOT surging problem.

    Thanks Glynn

P:S: Any more input is welcomed.

If you could get the numbers from the old one, and the new one (as well as your results).... I'd appreciate hearing. Always good to hear what "does" work.

Re: Surging 250 pro xs (EuropeanAM)

I had exact same problem on an 08.

    Replaced:
ECM Merc said this would fix the problem also on mine, but didnt.
    Plugs
    Injectors
    Reeds
    Coils
    Direct Injectors

Ran several on water tests and every test in the book.

    Solution: FUEL RAIL!

Last damn thing we could change i think lol
I bet Don does not remember it but the Fuel rail was his suggestion!

my 06 250 xs had a similar issue that turned out to be the fuel rail also or something similar and it wasn't cheap...........after that is when trading for a pro xs and 5 years warranty started sounding real good.......my XS was a year out of warranty and had about 590 hrs on it so I was nervous about how many hours she had left before some big(er) expenses started comming..........

Look forward to hearing back.... and don't sweat the fuel rail comments. Yes, occasionally a set does need to be replaced (but if your engine is under warranty... you shouldn't have to worry about it).

Re: Surging 250 pro xs (EuropeanAM)

Well...I received a little surprize when I pulled up to my dealer today. We thought we were getting a new replacement PCM but instead it was a test PCM from Merc. Took the original off and installed the test PCM . We then went to the water. The first thing I noticed, smart craft said, (break in).I asked the mechanic, he confirmed that it was double oiling. When I gave it throttle, the holeshot believe it or not had improved. ( no clocking by watch) Even with the livewells full in my PUMA FTD it felt better. The best thing, there was no longer any surging on top end. (79.3) with two people. (77-78) all day. Before, the hole shot sucked and top end a week ago was (75 - 76) We got back to the Dealership and took the test PCM off. My original and the test PCM is being shipped back to Merc. Now I have to wait for my PCM from Merc. I just hope it is a good as the test one?

Mr Don, I'm not sure what good these numbers will do you? Could you explain?

ORIGINAL PCM 8M8022142 PCM 0801 Date Code 5-23-09

TEST PCM 8M0051671 PCM 0701 Date Code 7-12-07

Re: Surging 250 pro xs (NELACAT)

That's surprising..... the 8M8022142 calibration was very stable (especially on the top end) when used with the 250 ProXS.

Glad to hear they found you something that appears to do well with your setup (and is a simple, bolt-on solution).

Re: Surging 250 pro xs (EuropeanAM)

Just wanted to let you Know that I ran my boat today with the new PCM calibration. Same result's, it performed great. The throttle responce is a definate plus. No surging. The calibration number is now the same as the tested PCM. 8M0051671

Thank you for the help and interest.
