1996 Stratos 201 XLDC Deck Repair, Carpet and Seats

Just finished this today. Took the advice of everyone on this forum and it helped a bunch. Hope the pictures help others.

I messed up and only got 21 feet of carpet...mainly because I ordered before I read a thread recommending to get an extra 10' of boat length. As it turned out, I was only short about a foot and I was able to leave the old carpet under the bench seat in place. Very important to mark the direction of the carpet grain as well. Although I took care to ensure all grain ran the same direction, somehow I got one lid panel backwards. I think it was because I wrote the arrow on the lid in the wrong direction.

I used 3M spray adhesive on the aluminum lids and indoor/outdoor carpet adhesive on the fiberglass deck and floor. I also use the orange citrus stripper from Wal-Mart to help remove the old glue from the deck and floor. It also did a fine job removing rust stains from inside the tackle storage containers. A standard razor blade scraper worked for the lids and I used a larger 4" wallpaper scraper for the deck. Some oxidization on the lids was scraped off and primed with self-etching primer and painted with flat black spray paint. On tougher spots, I used a wood chisel. After most of the glue and stripper was removed, I wiped down the entire area using a rag soaked in lacquer thinner before applying the new indoor/outdoor carpet adhesive.

The bench seat is original and was reupholstered locally. I was able to get the bench seat recovered and two new seat covers and one new cover with foam for the Tempress seats to match the original for 800.00. The carpet is 20oz Beige from Ranger Boats.

The hole in the floor was repaired using fiberglass resin and plywood and some metal screen. I used a jig saw to cut out the bad wood and we applied fiberglass resin on a piece of ¾” plywood used 2" stainless steel screws to secure it to the deck. We had to bevel the edges where new wood met the old a bit to allow for the screen thickness and Duraglas. We didn't have any fiberglass matting or we would have used that. Then it was covered with 2 coats of the Duraglas (blue stuff) that has reinforcement in it as well. The Duraglas was grinded smooth after each coat with a Dual Action sander.

    Turned out nicely!
The carpet looks great. I see the trowel marks and perfect for ensuring good adhesion to backing of carpet.

I bought it from a marina...they sell Ranger boats. Cost was only 11.87 per 3' by 3' yard. Since I messed up on the lid...I ordered another piece 6' by 3' and they are shipping it to my house for 31.52. Cost for the carpet is 11.86 per square yard. Beige part number 9798.
