    Clear Coat

I am new to the forum and have enjoyed and learned from the information provided. I have an older Skeeter Bass boat and the clear coat is coming off.
Could anyone give me some advice as how to repair without ruining the flake paint underneath and hopefully apply a new clear coat. I would appreciate any advice or experience you may have
    Thanks
    Phil

You need to get in touch with basscat7.

It looks like a clear coat over the gel.

I read alot about the clear on top of gel coats. What is the main difference between the two? I had touched up a spot on my ranger like 8 yrs ago with regular clear and it is still shiny while the rest of the gel coat is faded and rough. To far to even think of wet sanding with out hitting the flake.

Pictures 4&6 look like automotive clear. Someone spayed that on to make it look shiny again. In maost cases it doesn't last, as you can see. It should be removed.

    Re: Clear Coat (Skeet'r89)

you could be right I just dont know. The guy I got the boat from had owned it for several years and he didnt spray it. My challenge is how do I get it off without destroying the flake. I would love to save it and respray the clear but if it is not going to look right I would just as soon sand it all down and repaint it. Im looking for suggestions on how to go about it and was hoping someone had a similar problem and solved it. I have seen some strippers on the market. Thank you for taking the time to respond this is a great site with very helpful people.

Thank you I didnt get the IM or I dont know how to get it. The clear is coming off on the deck only the rest is some scratches. I could only pray this would come out half as nice as your Pantera. That is absolutely beautiful. I am willing to spend the money and time to restore this boat Im just not sure how to go about it. I have no one in this area to ask or show it to for help. Thank you for taking the time and getting back with me

Like Larry said pics # 4 and # 6 look to be a clear coat paint or some type of polyurethane that was sprayed on the top cap to re gloss it.
Most of those type can be removed with one of the Marine strippers that are safe for the underlying gelcoat.
You can also mechanically remove it by sanding and peeling it using Teflon or plastic scrapers, but that takes a lot of sanding usually.
The strippers will lift off the majority of paint, varnish, etc that is on top of the original gelcoat without harming it.
They work well when the directions are followed. especially the air temp, needs to be between 65 and 80 degrees to use.

    West Marine makes one.

    Aqua strip is another :

Once you get the peeling auto clear removed you can see what needs to be done to the original clear gelcoat, if it can be compounded down to a gloss, or needs to be re gelled.

Thank you I will order some stripper and go from there. On the scratched areas do you need to sand and fill and re do the entire area with new flake and gel or can the scratches be address in a different way

I am helping a friend work on his gelcoat right now. The previous owner put a cheap clearcoat on it and it is now chipping. Did you try the stripper and if so did it work? I am just worried it might harm his gelcoat?

Someone did the sane thing to my boat and I an using aqua strip and it works great. Just put it on and let it set until its dry then remove and it does not harm the gel coat at all.

Automotive clear is not intended for the marine enviroment,,,,,,do it the right way first and enjoy it for years to come.

Was it your motor cowling that's all faded and chalky looking, or your boat?
