    Re: buffer (gcopple)

If your going to rent a buffer home depot is im guessing in the 30 per day range. Harbor freight has them on sale ranging at times from $29.99 to 34.99. They are tough and you can put a hook pad on it. One for compounding and polishing. I got 3m and used them and are worth the money in my opinion. Are you buffing out a gelcoat or?
Others will be along soon and probably same the samething.
Im me if i can further help.

Going to cost you $ 20.00 to $ 25.00 a day to rent one.

You can buy one for $ 36.00.

    Re: buffer (gcopple)

My advice would be don't buy it. We bought one at the boatyard I work at to replace a dynabrade last spring. I tried it on an awlgripped hull for 5 minutes and told the parts dept. to send it back. Worthless. This machine had no power. Any kind of pressure and the machine stops. Regardless of how high you set the speed. It may not work for you, but spend some money on a decent variable speed machine. Or see if you could borrow one. At my yard we will rent machines and the appropriate pads to customers. Any ?s let me know.

    Re: buffer (stinkus)

Maybe you received a bad one because they have been used by a lot of people and do a decent job of compounding.

You are not getting an industrial grade product to use full time in a body shop, but you are also not paying the $ 100.00 - $ 200.00 price either.

For the one time, or occasional use that most of the ones used on this board get, they are worth the $ 40.00.

Comparing a $ 40.00 Harbor Freight Buffer to a $ 200.00 Dynabrade buffer is not apples to oranges.

That's another of the inexpensive Chinese knock offs, they will all do a decent job of compounding for the money, $ 40.00 - $ 60.00, all have 10 - 11 amps, and probably manufactured by the same parent company.

yes it will work..I believe the gray pads are finishing pads.

I had heavy oxidation on my boat and these pads made her look new

    Re: (Skeet195)

thanks for all the help guys...my gel coat really isn't bad and don't even know if it will help but i have some spots that i used some marine tex on and there is sanded area's that i have wet sanded to the point of 2000grit and just need to get them back to normal. i am planning on doing the entire boat though...compound and polish then seal it. see what it looks like. then next will be carpet a few other blingy things and some new seats...hoping the boat seat store gets their new ones soon, i would love put some of those bucket seats in, i have an old school bench seat now.

    thanks again for the help.

    Re: (gcopple)

pulled the trigger and got the whole kit. it would have cost the same as piecing the harbor freight one together with the pads and was actually cheaper because of the free shipping. i'll start posting some pics of the stuff i have been doing lately.

I bought the Porter Cable one but I also use it for the cars etc. Well worth the $150.
