    VST Leak

Opened up the VST on my '97 225 EFI to check the float and clean the filter. Now I have a leak. Can I use an aneraobic gasket material like you would use on your trucks transfer case/transmission housings? Or do I have to replace the funky shaped and expensive O-ring?

You will need to replace the o-ring seal if it is leaking.

Also, while you have it apart again, VERIFY THAT THE FLOAT IS LEVEL when closed.

I'd like to add from past experience that, you don't have to buy the expensive "O" Ring from Merc. Order a bulk length (say 2 ft.) of this "O" Ring material made in Viton (fuel resistant) from McMaster Carr. Clean out the "O" Ring channel/groove on your VST. Now install the "O" Ring material you bought into the channel/groove all the way around the VST over lapping the ends side by side by 1/2". Apply Super Glue to your over lapping ends and allow to set up (10 Minutes). You can now reassemble your VST. If you have a problem with the "O" Ring material staying in the channel/groove, apply several spots of gasket shellac in the channel/groove specially around sharp bends. It will retain the "O" Ring for an easy reassembly.

I have done this numerous times without any problems at all.

    +!

Most of the time the O-ring just expands a little. I have fitted the old o-ring back in the channel and cut out a small portion of the o-ring from a straight section and super glued the ends back together.

THAT SURE IS ONE EXPENSIVE O-RING!
