    Re: motor painting???? (javelin90)

I am in the process of putting my 20hp back together right now. I broke it down and then lightly sand blasted all the parts(just the upper works). I sprayed it with rustoleum proffesional and I have to say it looks really good. Also thanks to Iguana Graphics for the new cowling stickers. I will post pictures when it is done. I figured I would do a small motor first then I will do my 150. Its alot of work but in the end it is well worth it.

    Re: motor painting???? (javelin90)

I have painted a few lower units in the past. Just takes some sandblasting (or water sanding), some primer, a littler more water sanding, and OEM spray paint that can be bought from most manufactureres

    Re: motor painting???? (javelin90)

Here are some pictures of my progress thus far. I went to this week and they have the zinc chromate for priming and have the color also. I am going to apply at least two coats of base and three coats of clear. I am going to make sure it is all smooth and prepped before painting. Iguana graphics refereed me to a person to get my striping for the lower unit. The cowl decal is in good shape so im not replacing that. Will keep you guys updated. If anyone has any tips os sugesstions don't hesitate to let me know.
    Thanks, Garland

    Hi, your motor looks great!!
I was able to get some warmer weather last few days and i got the motor painted, 3 base coats and 5 clear coats. It has bee na labor of love but i am excited with the final results. I will post pictures next week. Waiting for the clearcoat to dry good before removing the paper on the cowl.

javelin90, does your GT start OK, do you have to choke a lot when you first get to the lake? I have an 89 GT150 on my Ranger 360V.

    Re: motor painting???? (okcbass)

    It's a johnson, cold naturered...LOL
seriously, I have to choke mine and ususlly it fires right up. I had the carbs rebuilt two years ago and it idles and runs good. Once started up that morning usually i choke it once and it fires up all day. If yours starts to idle rough and or is hard to start. You might want to look at the gaskets where the carbs. sit against the head of motor. When i had my carbs rebuilt the mechanic also replaced the gaskets i was talking about as they were older than 10 years. What would happen is that the gaskets swelled up and restricted the fuel flow. He knew right away what was causing the stalling as soon as he saw the gaskets as he knew they were older than 10 years b/c of the originial flawed design. Does your motor run good idling, and on full power? I switched from a renegade prop to a raker and it runs even better. It pops on plane quick and is running a little faster on top end. 62mph (gps) and turning 5600 rpms.
What kind of stats you got and email me some pictures of your 362...
    Thanks, garland

I just placed a decal on the cowling and was wondering if I can put two coats of clear spray over the decals without ruining them?

    Re: motor painting???? (avsfan605)

You can try it but unless it has a roughedup surface it might not adhere good and also the chemicals in the clear could cause the glue to come loose.
