    Carpet Job started, please help

Hey guys, I have a 2004 Stratos 285...I started this weekend ripping all the carpet off, got done with that and kinda thought the hard part was done considering Im buying the carpet pre-cut...Boy was I wrong!!!! The glue is a nightmare to get off...First I tried a sharp scraper, worked ok with the big glue...Second i tried some stuff called Goo Gone, that stuff is a joke when it comes to old carpet glue...My friend told me he used Acetone when he done his last year, so Third i went to Lowes and bought a gallon, came home poured some on the boat then on a rag and started rubbing and wiping...It was better than the Goo Gone, but boy is it taking along time and that stuff evaporates so quick...My arm feels like JELLO....Is there anything better???? Does ALL the glue have to come before laying the new carpet?...I have just started on the front deck, CANT WAIT to get to the floor!!!! Please help!!!

This stuff is money...put it on with a brush thick let it set overnight and it will peel right off or used a power washer.

It isn't cheap but well worth the excess labor

I got it at the local Sherman Williams

Sometimes, I miss the obvious, It does not have to say "Marine or Marine Grade" to work. I get most of my kick plates, end pieces and some other things at the local carpet stores from their indoor/outdoor section(Glue excluded)! As long as it fits your needs and lasts, that is what it is all about! Good Luck Mike

I power sand (orbital sander) the old glue off of the fiberglass.
Use red scotchbrite pads and cheap laquer thinner for metal lids.

Not sure I like the idea of "pre-cut" carpet though? You make one little mistake and that's IT. (well, I use contact cement and when it hits, it's STUCK). I guess it'd be okay if you are using some sort of slow drying glue.
I think the new secret color is "A-Rig"..........

I left most of my old glue on there. It was still pretty tacky.
I used some contact cement and everything was fine. My carpet is 5 years old and I've never had a problem.

Yes...I just did my 2001 TR20 and used Goo-Off industrial strength. They sell it by the gallon at Lowes. I put it in a high end bug sprayer and went to town. You will need a painters mask..dust mask wont protect you. You will need to scrape right away but it comes up like butter. Its a big job no matter what.

I used Acetone, Goo-Gone, and MEK. They all work about the same. Brush on liberally with a chip brush and let it dry. Then take a grinder with a cup brush and it will come right off if it was laid with contact cement. I scraped and wiped and scrubbed until I finally learned that trick.

I always use a stripping wheel that attaches to my drill. It costs about $8.00 and can be bought anywhere. I never had a problem removing old glue and it is super quick without a lot of effort.....Mike

    First time post:
My buddy used "no fume" EasyOff Oven Cleaner. It worked great melting the glue so it could be scraped off with a putty knife. buy the way ... his nickname: "McGiver"

I am doing the same project....I used an ORBITAL SANDER with heavy grit sand pads. You don't have to get all of the glue off...just knock off the heavy "crust" so that no lumps can be felt under the new carpet. I made sure all areas were smooth.... Most of my carpeted areas were lids though. I was able to peel most of the carpet up without a problem.
