Mercury 225 DFI 3.0L oil usage

    Hey guys

I was wondering a few things. I just got back from an offshore trip. I toped off my inboard oil tanks. I burnt about 50gals of fuel in each engine, and about 2 gals of oil pre engine a total of 4 gals. I thought this was on the high side i want to get yalls opinion.

    thanks

sounds perfect to me, 50:1 ratio.

When looking at DFI oil consumption, there's a couple things to remember:

-Your DFI engine requires approximately the same lubrication as a Carb or EFI engine (for instance, at 3000 RPM's, running for one hour, both an EFI and an Optimax engine will require approximately the same amount of oil).

That being said.... I'm betting that the 50 gallons of fuel you consumed went a LONG way further than the EFI would. Not a case of burning too much oil..... you're just burning a LOT LESS FUEL.

I thought the 4gals of oil to 100 gals of fuel was high. cause thats a 25:1 ratio

With my experience with bass boats and my partners optimax, that is at about twice as much as I would expect unless you were running flat out the entire time. How ever Don has a lot more experiance with that than I do. I average about 70 to one with my 96 225 3.0. I think Oil requirement per hour would be about the same for either motor, obviously the DFI will use less fuel in the same time period, but that seems excessive.

You modified your post after I posted. You originally stated you used 2 gallons total.

    I also noticed this.

A bit difficult to recommend when things don't remain constant..... probably best to have your local dealer check your engines/systems for oil leaks.
