Re-carpeting hatch lid with hinge...

I am re-carpeting my boat and am looking for some input on how to carpet my hatch lids. My lids are aluminum and the hinges are welded to the lid and then riveted to the hatch opening. I was planning on carpeting over the hinge so the hinge cylinder is not visible on the deck. I would expect that I should only apply glue to the flat area of the hinge and not the actual hinge cylinder. My guess is, if the hinge cylinder is glued, the back side of the carpet would wear faster tear sooner due to the movement of the hinge. Is this true?

I read that some people remove the hinge and reattach them. That is not an option since my hinges attach to the underside of the top of the lid which would force me to reattach the hinge from the top of the lid and then exposing the rivets\screws. Here is a VERY crude diagram looking at the underside of the hatch. The hinge is red.


Does anyone have any other ideas?

Mine was like that. Here's what I done. Think of the first pic as looking straight down on the lid. I stopped the glue at the point that's noted but I ran the carpet an extra 3" past the end of the hinge.

The second pic would be looking at the lid from the side.


After I mounted my lids I went back and trimmed the excess carpet that hung past the hinge. Hope this makes sense. It's hard to illustrate what you're trying to say!
