    cracked transom

    Hi all,

I have a 1978 hydrasports 178vee. I have been considering restoring it for a while now. The thing that concerns me the most is two small cracks leading down the inside of the transom. I read some wear that if you put weight on the motor and the cracks open up that you have problems. This is exactly what happens.

The person that I bought it from said that it had always been like that and it never gave him any problems. But he also said that he once took it in to a shop to have the motor worked on and because of the crack they refused to touch it.

So my question is, can it be fixed with something like seacast or should i look for a different boat to buy? We ran it last year and feel that we got our moneys worth out of it. I would like to hear any opinions that you have. Also I can take pictures if you would like.
    Thanks

Unless the boat has sentimental value.. get another one. You can fix it, but the repairs would be more then the resale value. 1978 boat.. its done its time.

There are a lot of guys here who have totally rebuilt older boats from the inside out. Many had no clue as what to do or how to start, myself included. The design of the boat sometimes determines which methods of repair are practical. At the very least you are looking at probably$500 and several days of work. Up through several thousand $$ and several months of work. The first choice is to determine what the boat is worth to you. Second is the extent of the damage. Third is do you want to invest the time, energy and money into the project.

i have repaired my sons transom ... i used seacast very easy to use and that stuff is the bomb, rock soild. or maybe you could put a backing plate on both sides ,gunnel and the transom side, really depends on if you have wood rot in transom, if no wood rot put the plate on , if you have water in it you will have to clear all of it out and use seacast , good luck
