    Cracking at bow hook

I have a 2004 Tr-186. I noticed I have a hairline crack at the bow eye hook. On one side, it's about 2" and the other side is about 1". I do not know if its just in the gel coat or through the glass. I dont winch the boat on hard, I use the motor to get on the trailer and I havent hit anything. Doubt triton would cover this on the warranty, may need to find out. Any idea a ball park figure this repair may cost? Or would this be hard fix to do myself? Im just worried since this is a high stress area.

Bow eye, ..... probably one of the strongest fixtures on the entire boat. I'd bet just a cosmetic gel coat crack. If the bow eye loose?

The only way you'll know if they'll cover it as a warranty issue is if you ask them.

Re: Cracking at bow hook (F2008)

Im hoping its just the gel coat. i kinda figured this is probably one of the strongest points on a boat, especially since its in a bend. The hook is NOT loose at all. I took the winch and cranked it pretty hard to put pressure on the crack while watching it. There was NO flexing or any type of seperation in the crack. Which leads me to believe its cosmetic.

You could always just throw on a bow eye protector and it will give it protection from taking a hit if you think thats what caused the crack,Iv'e got one on my boat think its a pretty cool add on for really cheap.

is the bow eye protector stainless? I bought one before I noticed the crack and was about to put it on when I saw it. How was the insatallation? I've heard some say they will fall off, keelguard makes the one i have.

you may want to take a small very small drill, and drill a small hole just far enough to get through the gel at the end of the cracks to stop the progression of the crack after you put the bow eye protector. the crack probally started from poor beveling of the hole at the factory.

boatdrmn, the drill bit is a good idea. Depending on the severity and cost, i may opt for it, lol.

b*******, good news about bow protector. i would hope it stays on. I mean the back is covered in 3m. Did you sand the area first, or just peel and stick?

If it is from poor workmanship, then it would be a warranty issue IMHO.
