    Which glue for carpet

Bought a 98 18' Stratos last summer. Time to recarpet, change seats, and get the shine back. Ive read many posts about all this and want to say thanks for the info. Im pretty confident in doing everything from what Ive read but really havent seen what type of glue to use. Ive read about the 3m spray glue and the outdoor glue thats brushed. What is the best? Ive started ripping the carpet out today. I did take pics and will post them all when the job is done.

I used Roberts indoor/outdoor carpet glue on mine. You can use an outdoor carpet glue, but make sure it is in a well ventilated area, as the fumes seem to be stronger. Any decent home improvement store will have the carpet glue. I used carpet glue on all my decking, but used contact cement for the lids. Since you need to wrap the carpet around the lids (in most cases), you want something that will bond instantly. If you try to use carpet glue on the lids, the corners will keep raising on you, unless you clamp them until dry.

Contact cement. Spray on glue would cost more than the carpet. Ventilation is more important than anything. It will light you up in a hurry. took 2.5 gallons to do my 18 ft. boat

What I use is a solvent based all weather outdoor glue. Henry makes it. The Roberts is a water based glue. The henrys sets up fast and is completey waterproof. I`ve been useing it all winter nomatter the temp it sets up. I did A test with the Roberts and it took all day to set.

thanks for the advice on the glue. I have all of my carpet stripped and was curious about when I would be able to glue the carpet on the actual boat (it has been very cold in GA, and everthing I have seen ask for 65 degree weather). I have already made all of the cuts and wrapped my seat assembly and all of my lids.

I use contact cement. However I have done several boats, so im comfortable using it. I wouldn't recommend it if its your first time, cause it sets up FAST, so not much time to move it.

Man you all work WAY to hard on these carpet jobs,,,the contact glues isn`t needed for the tops of the hatch lids and floors. I use Henry 263 all weather outdoor glue,,,sets up fast,,waterproof,,,it`s a solvent based glue,,will not mix with water like alot of others do,,they are a water base. on the sides and where you fold itt over I use a high temp headliner spray ad.. Alot of the reg sprays will release in the hot sun.

Ok.... So quick breakdown of this would be:
    Decks (frt & back) - Henry's 263
Floor (under and around consoles) - Henry's 263
    Rod lockers and livewell lids - Henry's 263 ???
Edges and side of lockers & livewells - Spray glue??? Is this 3M brand??

Why not use the Henry's for everything? Is there a reason?

Will be starting my re-carpet project this weekend, I'm fairly good at any kind of hands on work so I'm not worried but want to get all the correct materials together. It seems so many people use so many different items such as the glue.. It gets pretty cold up here in the winter, does any of this glue have shrinkage issues??

From all my reading contact cement seems to be most common thing used.

I'll be super PO'd if half way though the summer my new carpet starts coming up!!
I know this is labor intensive.... And I can admit I have slight OCD when I do projects... LOL I like for thing to be perfect..
Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Which glue for carpet (BassTuner)

I use the Henrys glue on everything thats flat,,floors, decks, tops of the hatches,,I use a high temp headliner contact spray . You can get it at a auto uphostery shop where they sale the uphostery or supply store. I use it because it is made for the high heat in the roofs of cars,,I found it as a fast tack and holds great. I holds the edges and where you wrap the hatches,,oh and get you some cheap plastic clamps,,(Big Lots,,real cheap) and some paint stir sticks,,I use them to clamp the inside of the lids with the clamps till it sets up,,,just 10-15 minutes

Re: Which glue for carpet (onemorecast56)

Got a question about carpet. Have a 89 ranger and it had 16 oz carpet on it so should I stay with 16 oz or bump it up to 20 oz?

Re: Which glue for carpet (onemorecast56)

Thanks Doug..... Thats the info I was looking for!!

I have most of the heavy old glue up... Looked like it was from the trowel with the groves... Used a scraper. Now there seems to be a very thin layer of something also, Can I just trowel on the Henry's or does it need to be bare to the fiberglass/paint??

    Ranger:
As far as the oz of the carpet from what I understand it's personal preference, Someone else might help you a little more than me.

Re: Which glue for carpet (ranger374v126)

If your gonna do it use at least 20oz. It will hold up better. The thing I liked about contact cement is when you stick it down its done and you can move on. No waiting. Alot of manufacturers use contact cement for the whole boat.
