    Painting bilge area/gas tank area

I was unable to find an old post on this subject. I've used simple green and a high pressure hose to clean out the area and it looks ok, what can I use to repaint the whole gas tank area? I have alot of spider cracks and some old holes from screws and such that need to be filled and can it be done by hand?

Not sure about he old post but this is what I did.
I cleaned out the area very well and then used scotch brite pads to rough up the surface real good..
The area was just a gray color so I bought 2 part gray epoxy in cans.
Then I thinned it down with laquer thinner so I could use a brush to apply it.
The epoxy I bought was a slow 12 hr cure time I think.
Because of the laquer thinner it took twice that time to cure.
The laquer thinner let the epoxy flatten out nicely before it cured.
Have had no issues with it at all.

    If it were me...
    I would use Interlux BilgeKote

    http://www.jamestowndistributo...ekote

It is tough stuff!!! and very resistant to chemicals ( even battery spills) and cleans up really easy.

I recently repainted my bilge compartment. I had replaced my stringers, sole and transom, so I was needing to cover both new epoxy work and the old pre painted areas. I went with Interlux Epoxy Primekote over everything first. The only thing that will stick to cured epoxy resin is epoxy primer. I followed the directions on the can. They have a special brushing additive ( 2333N reducing solvent) to help it flow. After 2 coats of primer I painted on 3 coats of Interlux Bilgekote. I went with grey. The results were awsome. The Bilgekote really goes on easy with a brush and flows out nicely.

As with all paint jobs, the time and effort put into the prep, will determine the quality of the finished product. You should always completely clean and degrease the surfaces to be painted before you sand them, or you will be grinding the (grease, oil, wax,) even deeper into the surface your trying to get clean.

Heres a shot of the finished product before I glassed the cap back on

    Good Luck,

Ranger230, that looks as good as the factory finish if not better. No pin holes in coat from what i can see. Looks good.
