i started wet sanding. can anyone tell me if i will get the original color back. i have removed the hand rails and you can see the color diff. it is looking better but it doesnt look like it will get back. someone let me know because my arm is killing me. but if i have to keep it up i will
WOW!! did that boat punch somebody's mother? It's breaks my heart to see a good boat get mistreated. Yeah you should be able to get decently close to the original color and shine. Just keep the faith. Start out with 800 grit sand the whole boat, the go to 1500 grit, then to 2000 grit. Buff it with some heavy duty rubbing compound, then buff it the 3m final glaze. It is some really tough work but it is worth it in the end. That's going to be a great looking boat when you get finished.![]()
Sweet boat!!! Sad to see her being so mistreated but give her plenty of TLC and she'll be loyal to you for years to come!!!
I'm also jealous... I would love to be able to renovate a Ranger like yours from bottoms up... maybe one day after Im done with my Bass Tracker...
Keep us updated on the progress!!!
WELL IT IS HARD WORK !!!!
BUT SHE IS LOOKING GREAT
THIS IS STILL 1000 PAPER :sweating
That boat is definitely worth putting some work into. When you get finished it will be a boat worth keeping for a while. I think too many guys on here put to much time and money into boats that wont function and fish like a good bass rig. That one is worth it.![]()

On one that ruff , I wet sand with a DA sander that is made for wet sanding, but you can do the same thing with a 5 inch air powered DA and a surgical tubing attached to a water hose, turn down the water pressure so that the water just barely streams out.
Start with 600 grit and work your way to 1000 grit, only use the da on flat surfaces, if you try to use on corners and edges you will sand through the clear into the flake.
Then use a regular wet sand foam block on the edges and corners, again go easy or you will sand through even by hand.
Using the DA will save your arms , personally I would just wet sand till smooth and clear coat it .. if clear coat is done right you can get a good 7 years out of a urethane clear coat job.
Clear coat, is about 100 bucks for the shopline PPG or about 125 for dupont's Nason clear.
But if you don't have a place enclosed to spray it to keep out the bugs etc .. you might want to check with a body shop on how much they would charge you to shoot it for you if you do all the prep work and buy the clear, some shops around here will rent you the booth for 50 - 100 bucks on friday eve, and push it out in the parking lot on Monday morn, so it stays in the booth till its dry
Just a thought, oh and dont toss the seats, until you check with an upholstery shop about recovering them .. sometimes its cheaper to recover, than buy new.
My upholstery guy would charge about 300 - 400 to redo the bench.
Carpet should run you for 20oz $90.00 - 150.00 for your boat
I fish There for I am
I love the smell of two strokes, and polyester resin
It'll stay a little yellow and discolored from the rest, it happens. I too noticed that on my silver Ranger. Looks great, keep up the good work. A wet sanding and a buffing will do that boat well. That's all she'll need.![]()
That is coming out great! I would love to pick up a boat like that
HOW IN THE H*** DO YOU GET THE GAS TANKS OUT OF THIS BOAT!!!!!!!!!![]()
well im starting to compound. and i noticed the gel coat is starting to pit. is there a wax or polish that will fill the pits or do i need to get it sprayed
Some quality pics would help us evaluate where your at.
But yeah I would think it will probably need to be sprayed.
My 350v was as rough as yours and it looked 100% better after wetsanding and buffing bit it still wasn't enough.
I had a friend shoot ppg deltron dau75 clear on it about 15 years ago.
The clear has just started to peel on it in certain spots the last couple years.
Probabaly more the fault of my poor prepwork than anything else.
took it to the water this morning just to run the motor . DAMN that thing will fly i guess it is light since i have everything out of it. but since this was the first time on the water i was very happy with the performance of the motor. i did have an alarm sound on me twice but dont think it is a major. (well i hope not)
to all those that helped i thought i would help you remember the cond of my 361 i will post pics at the end of week i have the carpet almost done

The 1992 175 FASTSTRIKE was a hot motor...put out way more that stated horsepower. They tuned them down the year after that
Well I finally got the carpet done. still have some detailing to do. but I cant go the summer without fishing out of it. Its not perfect but i think it is like night and day.
Im very pleased. but a hell of alot of work but worth it i have a total of 3368.00 in it and that includes every dollar that went in the boat didnt keep up with the man hours (she acts like she knows) still have some things to do like a deck ext, recessed tray, hyd.steering,so on, on cant wait to run that motor for the second time I will post on the motor at the end of the week
