If you are hitting flakes already the gel was really worn. Stop sanding and try a spot by hand with the compounding and see how it turns out. If it shows up decent then just compound it down on a slower speed and not much pressure.
How old of a boat are you doing and was the clear gel worn away ?
Its a 96 Pantera II, but the owner left it uncovered in Arizona.
The pics look good. After the compound are the flakes still showing or can you feel them ?
There still silver but I cant feel them. We were real careful not to hit them.

Make sure you are actually feeling flakes and not the oxidation. On some boats the oxidation is so bad that it is rough and can feel like the flakes coming thru.
I have a bunch of experience doing this, sent you a PM. I know about the boat and that was a SMOKIN deal you got if its the one I saw on craigs...I almost bought it just to resell.
