Restoring a 87 Dyna-Trak 180SS fish/ski

Here it is boys and I got her at a steal. 1987 Dyna-Trak 180 SS project boat for only $750.00 She needs a little work and TLC, but the hull and paint are flawless and she is what I have always wanted for a boat. I will post up better pics of the progress and I am going start on her very soon so be prepared for a flow of questions from me.







This is the boat I almost bought befor this one! Thank god the guy did not call back!

Thanks guy, but like I said I still do not have it yet! I am waiting for the guy to call or email me back to see if it is still availavbe and ready to go. I have the cash in hand all I need him to do is make the move.

Either way I am going to get me a fixer upper and post pics for all of you guy starting to do the same.

Dont want to stress ya out but I really hope you checked that motor over well. Even for 750 those motors are questionable.

I did not get the motor with the deal though! The one in the pic on there was a customers that they were just hanging and did not have it hooked up. I think that I am going to wait til late fall to start the tear out. I want to enjoy this boat for the summer and I decided to fish off of the trolling motor.

The hull is solid and basically perfect, but the floor is bad. It is not soft or spongy to fish off of. I would love to put on a 150 this summer, but the transom is going to have to be rebuilt by me.

Good luck man. That looks like a cool little boat to mess with. I'm sure you know to take it slow and see what you've got ahead of you. It could easily become a can of worms, and a $750 boat will end up costing you several thousand and hours and hours of work. Fixers-uppers can be good deals, but I'd only buy one for the sake of fixing it up, not for the sake of saving money; because you won't.

I'm not here to rain on your parade, rather just cautioning you to take it slow and not get tunnel vision on a hull that may or may not be worth it. Does that make sense? I mean, I hate to see you put a $3000 motor on a $700 hull that requires $3000 worth of work....when you could've just spent $7000 and had a fishing-ready boat with no issues.

But if you're up for it, go for it! There's deals out there.

Congrats...it's a nice looking boat with lots of potential. Ya, you could have spent $5-7K on a boat that was in "good" condition, but several years down the line, chances are it will need a transom and floor also. So, now you can add a bunch of money to it to fix it up.....or, you can do what you did, find a cheap hull and start working. In the end, you will have some money into it...more than you would get if you tried to sell it. But, you know what, you pretty much have a new boat then for the fraction of what it would cost new.

What really constitutes a new boat from an old one? Once you remove the motor and the shiny finish, you have a basic fiberglass hull, with some gauges, wiring and a few pumps.

The only catch here, is you have to keep the boat for the long haul. Have fun...

You are right it does have a lot of potential. Hey going from a 12fter to this is like trading in a Pinto for a Mercedes to me! I love her and I know I will be sinking some money in her, but that is what I wanted to do! I will put money away per week untill it comes the time to rip her up! I know what ever trouble I get in you guys can get me out of!

One thing that I know for sure is that I will rerun the elecrical, put new floors and carpet in, change the steering lines and other stuff so I will have less problems down the road if not any!

I talked to people and researched this model and I think she will have a bunch of years left in her!

OK then, it sounds like you're ready! And that's a good thing. It's just that you see guys that buy a boat for a great deal and think that they just got away with murder, when in reality they just bought the previous owner's problems. But it sounds like you're ready to gut it and do it right...and in that case, you've got yourself a great project. Congrats.

I am also going to shop vac the whole entire boat and clean the carpets to get her ready for trout season.

The main fun tear out is not going to happen until fall!

Do you guys spray off the carpet of just clean it (shampooing machine)?

TJ.....what's the max rating for your boat? If it's 200 there is a 200GT for sale in jim Thorpe by a BBC member. He is asking 1600 shipped so I'm sure you can get it for less.

Good luck on your project. You mentioned running it with a trolling motor for this season, do you plan on winching it on the trailer each time

Uhhh! No the max is 150hp! Keep an eye out though!

Yepper you better believe it! I know it sux but hey at least I will have forearms like Popeye! Hey dont forget that some smaller lakes do not allow gas motors on them!
