    Rewiring a ranger

How hard is it to tie the Motors wiring harness into a new fuse block? I am thinking of removing all the old wire putting in a new fuse block and rewiring everything. ANybody have any pics, or tips.

I don't think you have to wire anything on your motor to your fuse block. I redid my Ranger's wiring. It's basically a hot and ground from your starting Bat to the fuse block main posts. Then you tap everything (pumps, lighting, and acc.) in off of the fuse block. The motor's wiring harness does house the ignition (purple wire) and ground which will need to be wired in sequence to your gauges to provide power when running. Everything else from the motor's wiring harness is a sender wire which simply plugs into the back of each specified gauge. Grey goes to tach, pink to fuel, brown or anything coming out of the wiring harness with brown goes to you trim gauge. If I could redo mine I would first make sure of the wires needed to run to the back for pumps and what not, bind them together as one unit and pull it thru the boat all at once. Keep it clean!! Too many wires loose will cause major issues for snaking future acc. and wiring thru the boat. Good luck, it's not hard just tedious.

yeah, I got a standard fuse block with 10 ports from a marine dealer. You can find them anywhere online. Just don't get the old tube style and makes sure you have room for acc. Get more ports than you need.

    I've got a restored 1982 375 with a soon to be 95 175 Merc.

So the only wire that ties into the fuse block from the huge harness coming from the motor is the ignition wire?

No, you should have a black (ground), purple (12V POS for ignition), grey (tach sender), brown (trim sender and another for a temperature gauge if you have it. The purple will go right into a gauge (doesn't matter, closest etc.) then link the purple (ignition) from gauge to gauge till the last one. Then use the black in the same manner from gauge to gauge. Your motor gets it's power from the main cables to your motor. Then your acc or Fuse panel gets its power from a complete different set of hot and ground wires. It goes direct from start batt. to fuse panel. Then what comes from your motor goes solely to your gauges, nothing else.

Basically your motor runs your gauges off of the ignition system from you motor, then a complete other circuit powers everything else. This ensures that the gauges only work when the motor is running and the acc work when you want without the motor having to be on. Your later motor it will be all self contained, any fuses will be under the cowling, it needs nothing from the boats fuse panel. The wiring harness just goes to the gauges to power and send signals to them. I suggest you add an inline switch from the batt. to the fuse block as your master power unless yours already has that. Then just use the existing switch.
