auto paint and gelcoat?

Is it possible to use black auto paint for the background color for clear/flake, or is there an issue with the bonding of the clear to the paint?

I`ve done a number of flake jobs,,,,I reflaked a red metal flake bout,,,,used a black base coat and put my flake in what they call a color blender which is clear that you put the flake in. I sprayed the base black,,,then shot the flake on top,,,you can make the boat darker or lighter with how many coats you put on....
