    Metal flake gel coat repair

On the cap of my skeeter the metal flake is wearing through. I can feel the flake when I rub my hand across it. Its only wearing real bad on the last 2 feet or so on the sides near the back of the boat. What can I do to fix this? Do I need a new gel coat?

you might try to sand it with some 1500 gtit sand paper it might still feel smooth take some water and pour on it and see if is silver but it might sivler out if it silvers out you will have to reflake and gel

Re: Metal flake gel coat repair (bcfaulk)

This past weekend I was washing my 97 ZX185 and I noticed the same thing, same location with one exception. The top cap is white with a blue band of flake outlined in red flake. The red flake is completely smooth, its only the blue area where you can feel the flake. The gel coat looks good over the entire boat (good depth and shine), even where you can feel the flake. I was thinking that the gel coat must have been a little thin when Skeeter sprayed the blue stripe. Going to wax and buff it real good this weekend until I decide what to do next.

What would it cost to fix or put a new gel coat just on the flake on the top cap? Its white with just a 4 inch band around the boat. Would i have to gel coat the whole cap or can I just do the metal flake area?

to make it smooth you would have to spray booth the solid color and the flake. the solid color does not have clear on it but the flaked does so you would spray both to make them level. and sand them smooth and buff so you dont feel the difference . because when boats are made they spray the clear first from the in side. then all the colors then the fiber glass
