sealant for edges of keel guard?

I'm getting ready to install a KeelShield on my boat this spring. The online installation instructions recommend using a sealant around the edges to seal the installation. Can anyone recommend what type of sealant to use? Any advice on how to install it? I think I remember this topic coming up before, but a search didn't return any hits. Thanks

The instructions say to use sealant if your boat stays docked or moored 24/7

I would think 3M 5200 would be a good choice but has a slow cure time.

i use regular g.e. clear silicone. the kind for kitchens and bath. small tube is about 3 bucks, and it has been there, and in good shape for 4 yrs.

Thanks, folks. I got an email straight from KeelShield... they recommend the 3M 4200, but note that it only comes in white, and that once you use it you can put the boat in the water right away. Maybe if you use the 5200 and let it sit long enough to cure, it would be fine.

5200 cures to a stronger bond then the 4200. even if they recommend putting it right into the ware i wouldnt. let the sealer cure at least over nite.

RTV actually cures much much faster when in the presence of water, so I assume that is why they recommend it.

3M 5200 is a polyurethane sealant that is way better than silicone for below water line applications. Silicone will break down pretty soon if kept in the water!
