Alternative to Marine Plywood?

OK, I know everyone here said that marine plywood is great when you coat with resin and will last forever. The boat I am working on had a few pieces of boards that were rotted and as I was cussing out the person who did it I came to the conclusion that I never want to see another piece of plywood in my boat at any time!. With that being said where can I find fiberglass panels to make my livewells out of? Mainly I want top make a box under my decks with fiberglass and seal the edges with tape and resin. Should last forever and I never have to worry about the slight chance of water getting in a rotting the wood...

Where can I buy an alternative to Plywood? I looked at that King Starboard but you cannot glue it.

Mainly I think if I can find a 1/2" sheet of fiberglass I would be off and running...

A 1/2" Thick piece of F/G is going to be heavy and expensive.

the plywood is not the issue but the way it was used. if you pre coat a plywood board reduced 10% with only styrene and follow up with 3 coat of resin and some glass it should last for ever. you also need to work at 70+ degrees as well.

you can also use epoxy but thin with toluene

If you are not looking for something structural, you could make it out of fiberglass the old fashioned way.. by mixing up resin and cloth...

If you have the ability to mount it as an assembly, make up your "box" out of wood or something. If you are lucky enough to find a cardboard box that would be the perfect size, go with that. From there, cover the box in something that wont stick to the fiberglass, like packing tape. From there, just do a glass layup on it. 3-4 layers of 1700 biax cloth ought to be plenty for something like a storage box.
Once the layup is hard, then just remove the glass part from the plug that was made. Thats where its good if you can find a cardboard box thats the right size, becasue it will be easier to seperate.

If you want to get fancy and incorporate a mounting flange, simply cut out a peice of 1/4" or so plywood where it tightly fits the box, then slide it over the outside of the box and glue it to the box at the height where you want the flange. then cover it all with the tape. The plywood lip will be what gives you the flange surface, but its still only part of the plug and will be discarded leaving you a fiberglass box with a fiberglass flange.

the cool thing about it is since its a new layup, polyester resin is more than acceptable for making the part. Then you glass and tape it into the hull using epoxy.

http://www.mcmaster.com 1/4 glass is more than thick enough. I used it for my floor. Great stuff. Not cheap but worth it.

what about something like lexan?I know where i work they buy what looks like white plastic in sheets,1\4,and 1\2 inch. it's flexible and you can cut it with a saw.
i'm gonna use it for my seat bottoms,you can staple it.

He must be talking about Garolite on pages 3616 - 3522. there are several grades. I wonder which he recommends.
