Who can I contact to find out what Foxcraft used for spraying their boats (1991 1690V)? I need to find out if the final coat of the fibreglass bass boats were either: polyester gel coats, polyurathane, or epoxy coated.
Thank you,
Trevor

1991 is quite a while ago, if I had to take a stab at it, I would say polyester. Epoxy is relatively new and I don't think polyurathane is very common.
Someone else here may know for sure.

Most likely polyester. And gel coat is not applied like paint or how we do it on a repair. The factory puts it down as the first layer in the mold, almost like the first layer of glass.. Then they build up the rest from there working from the outside in.
As far as epoxy goes, even though its been around a while I dont think the new boats are even made of epoxy. The extra money would cut too deep into the profit margin on that 45K boat.

Well I hope you are right, because I was thinking about using this product:
http://www.fibreglast.com/show...+coat
Item #173 is a polyester, and they said it will only work if sprayed on top of a polyester.
Do you guys support this product choice?
Thanks,
Trevor

Translation can I come here and blame you if it melts off and makes a mess![]()
Well, I talked to a pro that did work previously on the boat. He said that Gel coat is best used in a mold and does not spray well (orange peal). He said it would be a lot of sanding afterward.
He also said that I could go with a polyurethane base and clear coat, which is like an automotive metallic paint. Therefore I would lose the original flake.
I figure that I should just put the whole thing on hold. I still wonder if anyone has prayed a whole boat with gel coat?
Thanks,
Trevor
Trevor,
Poly Urethane tends to peel off the boat over time since it isn't chemically compatable with Poly Ester.
However, poly ester gelcote does take much longer to complete than poly urethane. So you will just have to see how much time you are prepaired to spend on your project.
Look at th 1986 Ranger on this forum that we are restoring and you can get an idea of what goes into it.
I just restored a 1995 Ranger 461-VS and completely re-gel coated from the cap down to the water line. It turned out magnificent .... you can see a pic of my boat as I have it listed for sale on BBC -- RANGER Boats Section.

Trevor,
I just did my boat with gell. yes thier is alot of sanding but well worth it. mine is in the ranger section under az river rat![]()
Trevor,
You can use a clear coat without any problems. First, you will need to buff out the existing gel coating. I would suggest using the 3-M Imperial Compound (it costs a total of $100 per gal.) however, the results are really indescribable. You don't have to lose your polyflake! Trust me.
Jerry, do you have pictures of your work on yor gel coat and also i can't find the subject under Ranger catergory. Can you send me the hyperlink?
Thank you, G.
