How to use adhesive for carpet reinstall

    Guys,
Finally picked out some carpet and gonna try to get started this week.

    Got a question for you..
When you say to use contact cement....what are you using to apply it?
Are you using a paint brush ? and putting in on the boat or does it go on the carpet?

Most contact cements are designed to be applied to both surfaces, allow to dry and then put together. BE SURE YOU ARE ALIGNED AND READY! You can't shift the carpet when it touches down - it's stuck!

If doing a large area like the floor, this would be my way to apply:
    * Cut the carpet to fit and lay it out
    * Lay a heavy Item in the middle of the carpet to keep it from shifting
    * Lift up 6 inches of carpet on one end or side and apply adhesive to both surfaces
    * Let this dry and then bond together
    * You have only stuck a small section, so now would be your chance tocheck alignment and fit
    * If you like what you see, finish the rest

    Good luck!

Take a look at the thread titled "What glue?" in this forum, especially to ProCraft Mike's suggestion about using carpet adhesive.

We use contact cement on aircraft leading edges to install deice boots. The black rubber you see on the wings. When installing these you need it perfectly alined and you cannot mess-up. At $5000 to $10000 each side you can't afford to replace them. Here is the trick to install.

Cut the carpet exactly the size you want. Paint the boat and the carpet with the contact cement (the yellow type cement) and allow to air dry where it is not tacky at all. It can even dry for several hours. Even the next day is alright. You want it to be dry so you can position it exactly were you want it and it doesn't stick. You will be able to move it where you want.

When you are ready to have it stick, get ya some Acetone in a little can and a paint brush. Roll half of your carpet back.
You might want to put some plastic on top of the carpet when you roll it up to protect the carpet from getting glue on it. The glue is dry, but you don't want to chance it. Paint both surfaces with the Acetone. It will reactivate the glue, becoming sticky again. Gluing things this way is alot easier. Test a small piece on some scrap wood.
    Hope this helps

I like a foam roller for large areas, pour some cement out on the surface and spread it out. A brush may be more comfortable for some folks when you get near edges of carpet to keep it off the nap. Check your can for some application instructions.

A brush or a roller like Ritchie said.. You can thin down the glue with Acetone alittle. Just do a test to get the idea. When you glue stuff down like this, the next time you have to replace the carpet you will have to use vice-grips and a heat gun to get it off.

    Oh yea,
I use 3M 1300L contact cement. It's in a red can. The same cement you can get at the auto parts store like Auto-Zone, or Advance . They have it in small tubes that says trim adhesive.

I used the 50 cent 2 inch wide paint brushes from home depot. The natural bristle type.
If I left them out too long. I sank them in some glue for a few minuites and they were ready to use.
Cool tip about the acetone. I suppose that you could use that too.
