    old boat questions?

I have a 79 glastron Rick Clunn HP171, not really sure on the history but the hull and transom are in great shape and it has a fresh rebuild of the 140 johnson on it, 5 hours still i breakin, my question is, the top side with the flake is obviously old and weatherd but not horrable it is rough to the touch, so just for the hell of it i went out there to day and in a small area wet sanded with 2000 SP and just put a little auto wax on that area and the differance is incredible!!! 10 time nicer, so if o went over the whole top side with the 2000 grit and used some marine wax/polish would this be the right thing to do. I can't really tell if i am all the way through the gell or the flakes are just starting to poke trough,

Getting ready to do some finish restoration my self Jason, so I don't really have any suggestions for you. But I wanted to say that's a great looking boat and motor. Good luck with the project, and enjoy the boat.

Congratulations on your boat Trevor. I have restored 5 or 6 "old" boats now. I think its
a blast. If you have already sanded the whole cap I probably wouldn't start again now...
but..Next time you might consider starting with 1000 or 1500 grit first, then working up
to the 2000 grit. You'll get an even better finish if you do it this way. If you start with too
light a grit first, then it has a tendency to "glaze" over the bumps rather than taking them out. Have fun with your new, old boat......its a lot of fun being a boat owner.

thanks guys i am really looking forward to shining this baby up, its starting to warm up a bit this week maybe i will get it out and work on it a little, One more question, if i sand all the way up to a 2000 grit do i really need to buff or can i go right to wax?

Get a squirt bottle with water, some 800 & 1000 grit & do the wet sanding,
then some cheap buffing compund on a wool pad and high speed buffer. Then rinse it, and go to 3M Fiberglass Cleaner & restorer on a wool pad. It will look like new. They have all that stuff at WalMart except probably the wool pads.
