    Moulding for depth finder

I know this is not restoration but it's some kind of boat work. Started working on a mould for flushing mouting a unit up front on my bow (SX190). As some of you know, there is an X47 flush mounted but cant put anything else in that small hole. So i started out with a block of styrofoam (sp?) and started cutting away. After i get what i want then i'm gonna form, mould and glass it some how and get it covered. Has someone done something similar to this and what did you use to get exactly what you want ie, what did you use to make your mould?? Here is a pic of what i have so far.

I have post a few other places also, so hoping to get some help.

looks like you have done some research so far. at first, i thought that was snow . I would look into the car forums, there are alot of info on fiberglassing and making molds.

Heres a few good bezel molds for lcds i found in my mp3car forum...great how-to, with pics...

Re: Moulding for depth finder (Branson)

you should make it out of wood and bondo get it to what you want, the you can put a release agent ,chem lese or a fiberglass wax release agent..then you will have a putty plug.you could then build a mold with gelcoat and lay it up....take the mold and get it ready to shoot with gel and then lay it up and you would have a finished gelcaoted part...sounds like a ton of work!

now the cheat way build it out of wood and bondo and spray it with gelcoat and buff it up!

now the really cheat way leave the x 47 in the hole and mount the new unit on the floor or on a ram mount beside it !

I took one look at that picture and started realizing winter is just around the corner. I'll bet that's the closest thing to snow you guys get down Louisana way.

I made a mould simliar to what you're wanting to do in the front of my Blazer. I got some 1/4" rabbit wire and preformed what i wanted then wraped with wax paper, glass the form and finish it. When satiafied glassed to boat and painted. Did the same on top of console for a radio.

Re: Moulding for depth finder (highsmithv)

Thanks guys. I'm starting to get a few more ideas. After reading all of this, sounds like it may take a while. Oh well. Not in a hurry. Also don't like doing things halfass either. Like taking my time and doing it right the first time. Keep the suggestions coming.

Highsmithv, would you happen to have a few pics of the project??
