    Removing old carpet

    Guys,
I pulled up my old carpet last night but a lot of the backing stayed on the boat(Stratos 201XLDC). How do I get rid of the remainder of the backing and glue from the surface before glueing down the new carpet? I am only replacing a small section on the deck due to a small fire........
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Lots and lots and lots.....and lots of scraping. Go to the hardware store and get some razor scrapers a a bunch of blades. You can use paint thinner or acetone to weaken the bond but the mess is hardly worth it IMO. You can also use a wire wheel on a drill if the glue is not goopy.

I used a rotary sander with 150 grit paper. Just watch what you are doing and don't get in a hurry.

I used a wire wheel on a drill on my metal pieces.

I ended up using Laquer Thinner. It ate the carpet backing off in a couple of minutes. Looks like they used contact glue to hold this carpet down. i couldn't get it off so i bought some more spray on glue made by 3M. Perfect. Looks like a factory job.
    Thanks all...............Tom

All of these suggestions seem to be very helpful for when i get ready to recarpet my Javelin but I wanna hear more about the small fire on the front deck Tom.

Mineral Spirits, a wire brush on the cordless drill and also a heavy duty shop vac. It'll do the trick.

The fire? My trolling motor wiring caught on fire and luckily it was contained to the front deck. The guy I bought the boat from had used a jumper wire when he installed the 24V trolloing motor and bypassed the circuit breaker. The wires got hot and melted the jacket. Copper to copper........poof.
I took the boat to a local trolling motor shop and had him run all new wires. I also had to replace the fish finder that took some heat. The only thing the insurance company wouldn't pay for is the carpet. It was too old. So far I've spent $150 on carpet and materials. Looks awesome.
I did learn that my trolling motor will pull 50-60 amps when it is cranked up on high and is only meant for short moves. I'm a lot more careful these days.
