    1998 225 optimax setup

I have a 1988 champion 18'4" or 18'6" with a 225 hp optimax. Im only able to go 63.8 mph 5500-5600 rpm and chinewalks pretty bad at that speed. Any suggestions I should do to improve performance. Have a 26 trophy plus 4 blade and yes it's overpowered hull. Thanks!!!

    It's a 184...
    Details...
Jack plate? yes or no, what size if yes.

A 184 doesn't chine walk at 63, something is bad wrong if it is. And if it's only running 63 with a 25 at 5,600 rpms something else is bad wrong. Is that full throttle/full trim? Pretty vague.

We'll get that unit up and running, just need to part with some more details.

Re: 1998 225 optimax setup (pmgoffjr)

Yes there is a 6" jack plate, 4" below pad, full throttle full trim only gets me at around 5200 rpms or less and as I trim up it starts to go to 5600 rpm then starts Chine walk. but I'm afraid to trim up more because it starts to Chine at 63. Thanks for the reply:) let me double check my data tomorrow. I hope I'm running on all 6 lol

A 184 with a 225 should easily be hitting the rev limiter with a 26. And that should be at least mid 70's. Something just ain't right.

Do u think its my steering system? The motor does have about an inch if freeplay. I just raised the motor to 2.75 bp. It road a little better at 3". I should get a tune up.

Yeah, slack in the steering is never a good thing.

I'd like to see what is up with your setup, and for sure need to get that motor checked over. You should be able to twist a 27 tempest without any trouble on that setup, and see it running at least 76 or so without problems.

Well, i have new sparkplugs but it's double platinum and not iridium. I just took off the fuel filter and it looked pretty dirty. I will replace it tomorrow and see how it runs with the new filter and 2.75 bp.

Tighten your steering up first..if you don't know how ask, walk you through it, it's simple.

3 1/2 is really going to be close to where you want to be, that hull likes lift, and too high will kill the lift with a stock trophy.

Speaking of props...a tempest or even yamaha M will run circles around that four blade on that rig, and I'd be really suprised (if you're not carrying the farm around) if you can't run a 27 easily.

It really shouldn't even think about wanting to wobble below 70 at least, so make sure there isn't something else deflecting water flow, like a transducer, speedo pickup or some other garbage hanging off the bottom.
