Progressive Insurance - and aftermarket lower unit -?

I am just starting the process of making a claim for haul damage to my '04 Triton haul and '05 200 EFI Mercury lower unit & prop. My first question is that I have learned from a couple shops I spoke to that if gear case is too damaged Progressive will only put an after market lower unit on it from Florida and although it will have a three year warrenty I will have to send it back to Florida(at my cost) to have any work done on it. If I demand new "Mercury" parts to be installed, weither just a few parts or an entire lower unit, will they have to honor it?
My other concern is with the gel coat damage to underside. Again, after talking to a fiberglass shop said that Progressive is the worst to deal with and that they might have only very smal sections repaired and not the whole under side even though most of the under side is scratched/gauged up. The bottom strakes on eitherside are missing gel coat down to black matting in two or three places about 6"-8" inches long. If they do only make that type statement and I demand the under side bone colored haul needs to be repaired and match throu out will they have to honor it?
One last thing, do I have to worry about the B.S. of them making a statment of wear and tear even though it is obviuos the underside needs to be repaired. Just preparing myself for the crap insurance companies like to pull! So far, I am happy that I was told I do not have a deductable becuase of how long I have had my policy claim free! Thank you for any help/suggestions ahead of time.

I demanded my lower unit be welded and rebuilt with Mercury parts and the claims adjuster said they would put an after markert lower unit on. We went back and forth for sometime over the phone and I held my ground. I let him know that his lower unit is "NOT" held to Mercury standards and when my motor blows from exessive vibration Progressive will not cover it nor will the mechanic. I've been there with a previous claim on a Yamaha motor rebuilt and had to salvage it. Insurance doesn't cover mechanical failure. That warrany is only for the lower unit and not the motor it's self. He called me back yesterday and said they would rebuilt it with Mercury brand parts and apparently the three year warranty he kept pushing on me is void for tournament anglers, no warranty. You have to stand up for your self and keep that stand don't back down. Do your research and learn how your damage needs to be repaired. They assume they know more than you but, when they realized you know more than them or at least what your talking abou t they back down quite a bit
He also said my prop looked o.k. and that they would not do anything with it. I let him know that it needed to go on a Pitch plate to determine that and that it had to be sent to DAH Propeller for that. DAH tweaked this prop for me when it was new. I also, let him know that the hub kit will need replaced. Long story short my prop is on it's way to DAH propellers!
On Monday we get to go head to head over the fiberglass damage on boat haull!

    Bob,
I'm in a claim right now with Progressive with damage to my hull. I'll let you know how it goes.
Guy was friendly on the phone but we'll see what happens when he calls back. I just don't have a good feeling about it.

Progressive turned down my clam on my lower unit. The mechanic sayes its impact damage. As a mechanic and the guy who was driving the boat I
know it is impact damge. Going to send the parts out for metal fatigue testing. If it comes back as breakage instead of metal fatigue I am going to sue progressive. This years priemum is due on the 24th. Do you think they will see a check. NOT LIKELY There was talk of putting on one of the 800 dollar lower units from SEI out of Oldsmar Florida. NAAAAA Don't think so.

Going to have to call BOB.

    PROGRESSIVE SUCKS

OK it has been six weeks since I broke my lower unit. After several phone calls Progressive sent a differant agent out to look at my lower unit. This one says yes it is impact damage and they are going to pay the claim. BUT they will only buy one of those 800 dollar units from SEI. He says my policy allows them to do this since my boat is 8 years old now. WHY am i paying replacement cost priemums if I can't get what I want. (GRRRRRRRRRR) Didn't accept the check yet need to check some things out first. Any way if you get the right adjuster I guess Progressive isn't so bad. At least I am getting something.

I have had several claims with Progressive. The last one was 05 Ford F250, totaled, 05 S&S camper, totaled, and 5800.00 to 04 Triton. Now the accident was no my fault, but they handled repairs and claims. Have never had an issue. Due to having all three covered by them and damages to all three it did take about 3 weeks to clear all things up.

I too have had progressive claims on all vehicles and a bass boat. They replaced 4 lower units at $3500 each and covered all impact damage on the hull with me only paying $250 deductible each time. I recently jack-knifed in a torrential rain storm and totaled the truck, boat, and trailer and was VERY happy with the outcome. No complaints here. It helps to have a good claims adjuster working with you along with a mechanic in your corner that can successfully persuade the adjusters to your preferences.

Also, I have sold hundreds of the aftermarket lower units and factory lower units and they both hold up well. We track warranty claims on all units sold and see 2%-3% with issues on both. If they were as bad as your mechanic claims no one including me would use them. I have one on my own boat as well as my friends boats. ALL the parts are interchangeable with factory parts and they are built to the same specifications. If they are so inferior to the factory units then why do they cover ANY damage to the unit for 3 years and the factory only covers DEFECTS for 1 year?
