2009 250 Pro XS - Slow on Plane

I just got a 2009 Ranger with 250 Pro XS.

Took it out for the first trip after doing a bunch of checks and maintenance per Don's recommendations.

Filled the tanks, one tank took 20 gallons, the other took about 13. Also added Quickleen and Fuel Stabilizer (Merc Brand) per bottle directions.

Primed the bulb until firm per recommendations on this forum and the thing started literally in 2 seconds and stayed idling beautifully. Everything seemed great. Let it warm up for probably 10 minutes before idling for another 10 or so.

Finally went to step on it and nothing really happened. It sounded "OK", but just seemed bogged down. It would eventually get on plane, but at "full throttle" it'd top out around 4250 RMP or so. Top speed was only about 45 mph.

No irregular beeps, horns or anything. It seemed to be running good otherwise. Just had no guts.

I'm suspicious of a bad coil!? My understanding is that the engine has about 150 hours on it. This is a new boat/motor to me...

    Thanks.

Toasted Coil!!! Covered under warranty, but if you want to know which cyl it is, but a timing light on it. No flash = bad coil

    +1

Best test method is an "auto self test, plugs out of cylinder head" while connected to the Computer Diagnostic System (and a spark tester installed to read all six coils outputs).

If it turns out to be a coil problem, ask your dealer to reference Service Bulletin 2009-26.

Thanks again Don and to everyone else. I have an appointment at a dealer for next Tuesday.

Is there anything I should ask the service dept for that you'd be interested in? (i.e. report out of faults, etc.)? I'm not sure if they give that info out, but I'd be willing to ask if there was interest.

Also, if this turns out to be a bad coil, can/should I press to have all of them replaced? I don't want trips to the service dept to be a regular occurence. Does that service bulletin direct them to replace them all?

    You guys rock.

    Thanks,
    Tim

I'd ask for a printout of the "Freeze Frame (FAULT) History" and the "Run History".

As stated above, the Auto Self Test (plugs OUT of cylinder heads) is the best test for catching the suspected problem.

If a coil is failed, just ask them to reference Service Bulletin 2009-26. That should be all you need to do.
