    What's a fair tip ?

Guy is coming in the morning to do the back of the house and shovel the snow he throws on the deck . It's a ranch. He's charging $150. I don't want to short change him because I understand the work involved but I never had this done and want to be fair. Thanks

As someone who does construction and this type of stuff in the winter, I rarely get "tips". The price is the price, however on small jobs you are occasionally offered a tip sometimes. An extra Ten or Twenty and you will be appreciated and remembered! I am recovering from surgery but have gotten many calls for this, wish I was healthy!

I would not expect a tip. He should have priced the job at what he wanted to do it for. Give him the 150 and call it a day. You can offer him water, coffee or a coke that would be great.

Agreed with Brian and Rod. An extra tip doesn't hurt, but the guy did price it out at what he felt was the right price. If he's a really nice guy, and does an outstanding job, why not throw him a little extra? But if I were you, I wouldn't feel terrible about not tipping him. See how it goes, then decide after.

I shoveled 2 roofs this weekend and the customers payed the bill with no tip.. If you do, Kudo's to you. Just don't feel like you have to.

Money is tight I know, but I believe in a little something in appreciation, and y'all are right about the pricing and thanks again for your input

If he exceeds your expectations...extra $20 spot wouldn't hurt. It's hard work.

Seems like in today society everyone thinks they need to tip someone for a service provided. The "Tip Jars" are everywhere! The conveince stores even make you feel bad if you wait for your 3 cents worth of change! It's all bullchit! If you get GREAT sevice then do what you feel is right!

With that being said, we recently purchased another home. The whole house needs painting. To help cut down on time we found someone to paint all the ceilings and closets for what we thought was a great price. After handing him the agreed upon cash for the job, we gave him a $50 dollar gas card for his 3 plus hours of travel time. Once to veiw the job and give us an estimate and then again to go out and do the job. We were very happy with the job we received!

What do you feel a snow shoveler earns an hour? $150 sounds like a whole day's pay. Will he be there 8 hrs? Of course the danger of being on a roof would add to the risk factor pay. I know I won't go on my roof. Besides, if you are paying cash, that's $25 he doesn't have to pay in income taxes. Another thing is the liability factor. But that's another story.

Really, do you need an education to shovel snow?

Besides, like Bugs says, tip jars are everywhere. Do you really throw a tip in the tip jar at Dunkins' because you bought a cup of coffee and the counterperson smiled and said thank you? Maybe I'll put a tip jar at my cash register Monday morning when I go back to work.
