    For one thing because Mercury specifically states to use "Premium Plus & not the DFI oil" in the XS line of motors

    Don I'm sure can explain a little more in detail

    I know they want you to use the Premium Plus (synthetic blend) in the xs's. I wonder if it would be better off to use the Mercury 50-D (non-synthetic) for break in.Like we use in our steel bore race motors.(AND PLATED MOTORS FOR BREAK IN)

    Mercury built, designed, and calibrated this engine with Premium Plus oil in mind. It's higher RPM demands, and less low RPM demands, were two of the deciding factors (among others). The Premium Plus oil offered a suitable additive package, synthetic blending, while still maintaining the "petroleum based benefits" for extended "high-RPM" operation.
