Wasn't Stratos and Hydra Sports part of the Bentz family to some degree?

Earl left Hydra-Sports and started Stratos then moved on to start Triton then Caymas. When Earl left Stratos to start Triton, Alan Stinson got the nod to take over as Stratos' head designer.

What were the year ranges for the Earl boats for Hydra Sports and Stratos?

Earl was with Hydra-Sports from 1975-1983 then started Stratos in 1983 until 1987 when he sold it off to OMC boat group where he became President of OMC's fishing group until 1996. He then left and started Triton in 1996 until 2005.

I've spent a lot of time fishing out of a '78 Hydra Sports 178v (I think) and an '86 Stratos 179v. The old Hydra Sports already had one foot in the grave at the time and in a hard turn would squeeze the stuffing out of the passenger sitting between the side of the boat and livewell. Told my friend who owned the boat I felt like I was the only thing keeping it from folding like a taco at times. Was glad when the transom finally failed. His mom made it disappear by taking it to a job site she was hauling dirt to and using it as filler.

When Caymas first came out a few years ago, they were very high up on my list of potential "next boats". I pretty much like everything about them, being in a Triton now, I like the deck layout and have heard nothing but good things for the most part. I have never been in one on the water boat crawled all over a couple at the Classic a few years ago.

My question is that they seem to have fallen off a bit over the last year or so. There are less pros running them, there are a lot for sale and the resale value does not seem very high. I have also heard some rumors that they may be going away soon.

Would there be a reason for concern when buying one? I have been putting a few 2022 CX20 and CX21s on my "buy" list but the items mentioned above make me nervous.

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

    Thanks!
I heard just last week, that Caymas is going bye bye. Plus my cousin in Arkansas has one and said the fiberglass flexes and the deck has "play" in it. And now is stuck with it. I was looking at the CX20 a year ago, but the fiberglass issue kept me away. Maybe someone here has more info on that concern?

Just like the triton, “I heard from a guy who heard from a guy”. Stop it with this garbage. The worst thing for any boat company or any company for that matter is the BS rumor mill on social media. We’ve been hearing this forever with triton and that obviously ain’t happened. It’s probably turned some buyers away as will the negative spewing on the keyboard about caymas. And not one person spouting this crap knows what they’re even saying is true. How bout we just state what we know the pros and cons are about said boat brands and leave the “I heard so and so is shutting the doors” to ourselves and let these boat companies compete with each other for sales. It’s hard enough for em to make a sell right now, with how things are, I’m sure, without people spouting this kind of crap. It’s almost like some folks want to see certain ones to close up. I don’t like some boat brands, but I want to see them all prosper. I’d like to see the prices come down, but I don’t want em to close shop. Now carry on.

If you had one of those 6 lb Ohio limits you would have only got to 67.2.

Well said….. the As the Reel Turns soap opera is old as hell, rumor mill still churns and has little to no truth at all.

All I can is I must have got a good one. Or what you heard is pure bs. I've had zero issues with my boat. I don't even consider myself brand loyal. I'm just a bass boat junkie.

I agree. Zero issues with my 2021 CX18ss which gets used at least three times a week.

Never heard of a fiberglass flexing issue. Maybe the fiberglass isn't the problem.

The Triton 21xhp hull was one of the best bass boat hulls ever designed. Does anyone know if the CX21 uses this design?

No, not even close, the CX21 is more comparable to the Ranger 521 but with a better ride. The TR21XHP with a 250 is about 10 MPH faster at least. The new Triton 21XP is a closer design to the TR21X but still not the same.

Does the boat design really keep most of the backwash out of the boat?

I've never had a ride in a Caymas bass boat before, the closet dealer never has a demo boat.

the rear sponsions? it sure did on my skeeter. I could kill it WOT and wouldn't get any backwash....the downfall of that was serious porpoising at low speeds (like driving in big great lakes waves) and also a tendency to "slip" when cornering sharply in tight backwaters.

It helps but I don't know of any that eliminate backwash completely. You need to ride in one if you are seriously considering one. They have a good solid ride and don't sound hollow or slam when in rough water. They are heavy so they are not as fast as the Triton performance hulls but I'm more about quality and comfort nowadays.

I thought the newer hulls from most brands didn't have that problem for the most part? I do know you had to really work to keep from soaking the back deck of an old Stratos or Javelin. My buddy would shut down fast and soak the back deck of his old Stratos just to piss me off.
