    Best Texas-Rigged Dropshot Spinning Rod

Looking to replace a P5 Addermine that just snapped on me. Loved the rod but it literally broke under such little pressure 4th guide down. Probably going to go with something in the used market to save a couple extra bucks.

Here are some options I’m looking into:

    - Just get the same P5 Addermine again
    - NRX+ 822S DSR
    - Daiwa Steez AGS 7’1 ML Finesse Game Special

Heard the X10 Jade Python is great too. I’m open to any other suggestions in the high-end price range. If anyone’s had experience with the P5 Addermine and can compare other rods that would be a plus!!

Mine is a conquest 842S that rod has pretty much lived with 3/16 oz weight, a 2/0 covershot hook, and a missile baits magic worm on it for the last year. Haven't fished the NRX version of it but maybe it fishes similar. My 822S DSR I just use for nose hooked minnow baits.

I don't have experience with the others, but I imagine the Steez FGS would make a great t-rig drop shot rod. It is more powerful than I prefer for nose hooked baits and I'm currently looking for an alternative. I can't give you any specific feedback because I have not yet attempted t-rig drop shotting with it yet.

Interesting! I actually use an NRX+ 842S for strolling/lighter finesse techniques. I feel like it’s slightly softer through the midsection than the P5 Addermine. I’d like something with a stronger backbone but soft tip to get a good hookset on texas rigged dropshots and is able to do nose hook effectively as well. Not sure how the 822 DSR compares to the 842 SJR

They don't compare. The DSR is a relative noodle that only does one thing - dropshots and it does that thing like no other. It's an insanely sensitive rod but the softness might be an acquired taste. If you want a rod that does multiple things, don't get the DSR.

Thanks fir the insight on the DSR. Definitely going to stay away from that action because I want something for texas rig dropshot mainly. I have the 842 SJR what do you think about that for my applications?

I could be wrong but the conquest feels like they fish more powerful and maybe faster than NRX+ rods. I have
two 843C's one Conquest and one NRX+ and I think the conquest is a stronger faster rod may be same with the spinning rods. I have no issues at all setting hooks with covershot or roboworm rebarb hooks on tx rigged worms with the 842S. I caught a 6# catfish dropshotting on the conquest last week and had no issues wrangling it in.

Is there anything equivalent to the Expride B 7’2 ML spinning rod in the high end lines?

I don't remember the last time I threw a of texas rigged dropshot but I think any quality medium spinning rod would be fine for that. If I were to throw a texas rigged dropshot, I'd probably be pitching it at bushes and would use casting gear for it.

Agreed, this is a job for casting gear. Weedless rigging implies fishing cover. OP didn't mention lure, line, hook, or application...light/med/no cover, offshore, etc

NRX 842 would be tough to beat for Texas rigged drop shots. The 852 is too fast for drop shots in my opinion. The DSR is a great open water nose hook drop shot rod for Smallmouth, but not the best for your application.

I have the 842 but feel like its a little soft for what I’m looking for. Want something between an 842 and 852 with a very similar action to the Expride B 7’2 ML

    Discontinued- MB X7 Powerhouse

    Readily available- NRX 852s

Both are top tier for your intended app

If you don't like the feel of the 842 you have for dropshot then maybe a 872S? The 872S has basically same backbone as 852S but a slightly softer tip section due to the extra inches are in the tip section.

I agree that the 872s is a GREAT texas rigged or wacky rigged drop shot rod. In fact, it is a great drop shot rod for any "non-nose hook light line drop shot" application where you are fishing around cover with slightly heavier line. Maybe the GOAT for this application....

100%..... I think this rod and the 872s are excel at texas rig/wacky rig drop shot application, which slightly heavier lines around cover are needed/required. I think the other rod in this category that I am currently fishing is the Dobyns Xtasy 722 SF. Slightly "firmer" action and power over a traditional nose hook drop shot rod, capable of handling bigger fish without feeling overpowered. I hooked and landed a 36" Pike on a medium wire roboworm rebarb hook fishing a morning dawn 6" roboworm and had no issues landing that fish.

I ended up finding a really good deal on the Steez rod so I grabbed it! Excited to get it out on the water
