Are these the right SD Cards for updating?

I tried updating one of my Apex units and it never would update, although I used the same card and it worked for the other one. I ended up sending the unit back to Humminbird where they reported back that it updated fine! I don't get it. This is the correct type of card, right? There has to be an issue making the Apex card reading so fussy. Best advice is SanDisk.

I sometimes have issues with one of the card slots on my Apex 19, but the other one works fine.

WAAAY tooo much hit and miss in something that should be dirt simple. Think about this for a minute: When was the last time you had any other device buck about the SD card being used? Never had an issue with my Solix that I can recall.

Definitely not an expert. If you are not faint of heart, google SD and micro SD reliability. I had always assumed(should know better by now) SD was a rock solid way to use and save data.
There are so many situations and conditions that can mess things up it is crazy. From environmental conditions (heat is a biggie) In summer my finder will get too hot to touch. Many problems are caused by dust and dirt on those tiny connetions, Firmwear levels on older drives vs needs for latest chips. It goes on and on if you wish to spend the time. I used to feel it was dirt simple. Not anymore. JMO Bob

I have 6 HB's of various sizes and vintages. I have used the same San Disk Ultra Plus SD card for years updating all of them. Never an issue. Ordered it from Amazon. Copied files to it and went to work. No format, just shoved it in the slot.

One thing I do that may help prevent issues is doing my updates at my work bench. I have a 12v power source in my shop. I take the units in and update them bare.

I must say that it is absolutely necessary to READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION EXACTLY AS HB HAS THEM. Watch out for the yes's and no's. They can confuse you if not paying strict attention.

I also have done updates using an old laptop 12V adapter in my office. I totally agree with the "bare" comment. When I do update them in the boat, I disconnect everything but the power and transducer from each unit before doing the update... especially the ethernet connection. This allows me to update all units at the same time. I then power everything down and cut all power to my fishing electronics (which also cuts power to my two PGL 5 port switches). I then reconnect everything, power everything back up, and do a Restore Factory Defaults, which does that to all networked units at once. I then start my customization process. This may not be necessary, but it has served me well.

I have a SanDisk Ultra Plus 16GB card that I have used since 2017 to update my HB units and has never failed me.
Been doing the same thing by only leaving power and transducers connected to units, update each individually and power down the exactly as you do. This process has always worked.
