    07 etec 200HO -- facts/advice/smart A comments please!

Howdy fellas, been a minute, good to see everyone!

re: rule 1, please forgive me i don’t know the model # or i would have properly included it in the title.

So, I stumbled on a good deal on a boat; friend & family kinda deal. Its a 07 basscat p2 loaded out. Said boat is powered by a 07 etec 200HO with the lightning gc. ~400 hrs. Planning to pick it up monday. Sadly, my beloved faststrike will have to find a new home after … well, a lot of hours and years.

The ONLY thing that gives me pause on the deal is the powerhead and powerhead/gearcase combo. I just don’t know anything about the etec, literally ignorant.
The original owner told me he’s on his 3rd gear-case. Said the gear case was the weak-link, but he’s enough of a go-fast guy he stuck with it each time he blew the gears. I am not a very aggressive boat driver these days, but the fact that he had 2 come apart concerns me a little.

So … i’d love to hear (mostly) facts and hands on experience, the good, bad, ugly. regarding performance, efficiency, noise, reliability, maintenance, parts / service availability, cost of ownership, a few good disaster stories are always fun, helpful advice, anything and everything a guy should know BEFORE he takes on a etec. What do you wish you knew?

    Thanks guys

The stories will start to roll in but here is my 2cents on maintenance.
these two parts have caused runnability issues from being plugged or restricted. They are all DIY if you are that type. Note use caution when replacing the fuel return filter. It is located inside the fuel return fitting of the vapor separator. The fitting is plastic and will fracture if too much force is used to remove the hose clamp and pull the hose off the fitting. Parts listed below.

start to learn more on the engine by getting familiar with the parts catalog and get a service manual. There are special procedures for changing spark plugs, called ‘indexing’ that are important.

Barnacle Bills Marine Also offers an injector cleaning service. I highly recommend you find the downtime to send the injectors out for a few days and get them cleaned. These injectors are very expensive to replace, $600+ each, and getting harder to come by.

Don’t scrimp on oil. Buy quality - Evinrude XD100, Lucas, Amsoil. Saving a dollar on a $10k engine ain’t worth it.

if you are a DIYer get the Evinrude diagnostics tools. Go here. https://www.powersports-diag.com/en/...ntent=EVINRUDE

I have a 2009 200HO with 730 hours on it. I bought it with around 400 hours on it. Right after putting on my boat I had two injectors fail and thought I had bought a piece of junk. I replaced them and had the other four injectors cleaned and it has ran great since then. I did find that the return fuel filter was almost plugged up and that may be why the injectors failed. I run Top Tier gas with Lucas Ethanol treatment and XD100 oil. I still have the original lower unit and haven't had any problems. I do change the fluid every year before freezing temps start. I really like the Etec. It's really quiet doesn't smoke and not to bad on gas.

Hi! Injectors would be my main concern, if it was an 08, I'd say go for it.
