And he gave me the tuning sales pitch. I asked him to just order the shaft and I’d install it myself. He said he couldn’t. Gave me a bad taste. Went home and did a lot of research. My conclusion was tuning is a thing, but it’s not as big a factor as they make it. It’s equal to a car dealership charging $300 for $20 lock nuts on wheels and bluffing they can’t not do it. It’s just a money grab. Pure profit. I found the exact shaft at a local old school golf shop working out of a country club pro shop. Got it for close to half the price of Champions. My first and only shaft fitting and it was a game changer for me - longer and straighter. First time ever for me to spend money on a high quality shaft. I got the Ventus blue 6-S with velacore tip.
Well..... theres a few things that I didnt necessarily believe was complete crap. The puring... I wasnt sold on, from the start I wasnt. Now, when he was saying that club champion was only sold perfected shafts that were within 1-2 gm of advertised weight, that was somewhat believable. I could actually see a company of that size, whos main business focus is fitting to the best possibility for each individual. I do know that most shaft companies only guarantee new shafts within 5-10 gm either way of advertised weight. Which is pretty shitty honestly, because rule of thumb is 2 gm in the head moves the swing weight 1 point and 7 gms in butt moves the swing weight 1 point. 5-10 doesnt seem like a terrible amount, but when you are really dialing in a club, those gms count. Even when I blew apart my irons, there were already tip weights in my DG 120 tours (current shafts for my irons) that came from the manufacturer that way. Only like 3 had tip weights epoxied into the end of the shafts, so even the builders at mizuno take this into consideration when putting together clubs. Of course most these companies arent going to spend a ton of time getting these shafts so perfect, they would lose money that way, because at the end of the day, these shaft companies quality control just isnt as good as we would expect. now I have the KBS C taper lite 115x on order. They will be here next week sometime, and I am going to weigh each shaft. The website reads that this exact shaft should weigh 115 gm, but i dont expect each shaft to weigh exactly that. Of course I expect some to weigh 105-110 and some may even weigh 125. The heavier ones will be the ones I cut down the most, to get rid of weight (like my PW and 9I) and that cut off will get those weights close to the 115. The low weight ones, I will use as my 4i and 5i and cut the least down, but have to add weight back in the tip to get the 115 weight. Once I get them all dialed in, I will get heads epoxied on at that point. I could do math and build the swingweight into it with tip weights, but thats too technical for this brain, so ill just tip weight shafts to same overall weight, then epoxy heads and glue grips and the swingweight will get dialed in with lead tape on the heads of clubs. But it should be damn close to perfection when I get done doing this entire process.
