    Elite7 HDI and compass

I have an Elite7 HDI and I change the chart to north up on the bow unit so that when I'm fishing structure and not moving I have a better idea of structure orientation as I slowly work around the structure.

When it is on north up vs heading up, the chart does not move at all. Shouldn't north up use some internal compass and keep the map point to the north as the boat moves? Mine just keeps north on the top of the chart and never moves.

Well I read the manual and north up does what my unit is doing. But heading up should be using a compass so that if my boat is is pointing West, west would be on top of the screen and as I move the boat it would follow a compass orientation. But it does not, Iv'e moved the boat in a 360 degree circle with heading up on and it will only sometimes orient itself correctly.

Wonder if there is some kind of interference from the power wire making a magnetic field. If i turn the boat on high it will orient correctly, it only happens when I am fishing super slow on a piece of structure.

Heading is inferred from GPS if you don’t have an internal compass. If you are drifting backwards, the GPS infers you are moving that way and spins the map under the icon to reflect your new “heading”. With a heading sensor and Heading Up selected, the icon always points towards the bow regardless of any boat movement. North Up means the map stays the same but the icon will spin relative to any perceived GPS movement. It’s why a heading sensor is required equipment if you fish offshore waypoints.

Thanks for that. Further research indicates that my Elite 7 HDI does not have an internal compass and that is why my map only orients correctly when I move the boat enough to get a new heading up orientation.

I wonder if a point 1's internal compass will be acknowledge by my Elite 7 HDI?

if you have a NMEA 2000 port on the back of your unit Small Black then you can put a Point 1 on your boat and a NMEA 2000 Backbone and you will be good to go. You will never see a Unit with a built in compass as there is too much electrical magnetic noise for a Electronic Compass to work.
