Top water bite broke her line!

Tammy hasn't been able to catch a fish on topwater yet and was able to do it today. She caught her first top water fish...but that first fish broke off on her hookset...(as it has happened to many of us)...luckily she did catch another nice one on that frog from #hagsbaits


What have you guys found to be the reason that Flurocarbon breaks at the reel on a hookset..(after a long cast)?

I live in Florida and fish lots of slop so I use braid...

Braid only for frogs. 65 lb for me

Bad spot in the line from a backlash will cause the line to break. I usually put new flouro on after a backlash that requires more than mild digging to get out. Also only use line that floats on top water.

Knot failure and a kink in the line from a backlash are the most common fluorocarbon failures. I 100% understand my statement/statements on this post will not be popular. I’m not a fan of flourocarbon due to its higher failure rate compared to mono. Yes it may be more transparent and yes it may sink. The whole stretching less is still up for debate but yes it typically does stretch less but the % less that it stretch is not a big number. I’ll use a copolymer for two different very specific applications. Otherwise I’ll use Triliene Big Game mono on everything else. My style does not consist of anything with extreme heavy cover but if I was punching mats or fishing slop I would use braid.

So to the OP…why on a top water bait would you not want to use mono. Fluorocarbon sinks hence why use a sinking line on a top water bait. Mono does not float 100% but it will come across the top of water with less resistance.

As for the line breaking on the hookset, yeah, backlash damage or a hidden nick seems to be the usual culprit in my experience. I started checking the line more often, especially after a rough cast or tangle.

Fluorocarbon sinks.. if using the rod as a true multipurpose rod th e braid is the way to go

Flourocarbon ….. wrong line…. And it sucks in general. Braid & mono are the only lines you need.

This is what I do. 65lb braid for frogs and 15lb Big Game mono for all other topwater.

If you want a line to float when Top water or Shiner fishing weedy lakes you can use some silicone fly line dressing to coat the line.

Best way to avoid flouro troubles is to avoid flouro. And why use a sinking line for topwater?

Does she have fingernails and palm the reel?

There's a lot of test results on fishing lines--google is your friend .. A member here did some testing--can't remember his website. IMO FC line is more trouble than it's worth. It stretches as much as mono, it breaks easily , and costs to much . A good copolymer is much better. Evidently a lot of folks on this thread agree. The negatives outweigh any positives .

The best mono may be among the cheapest, Big Game.

The little bit of extra sensitivity flouro seems to give me when fishing moving baits makes it worth the trouble in my opinion. I catch a good chunk of my fish on moving baits by setting the hook when the bait stops wobbling and pop them before they realize what they had in their mouth. Rod never has a chance to bow over to really let me know a fish is on the other end before setting the hook. Even as much as I fish in the wind I still don't backlash bad enough often enough to feel like I'm wasting good flouro. Than I don't normally use expensive flouro anyway because the Academy and BPS brand is good enough for the fun fishing I do and would even trust it if money was on the line.

Those who love Big Game need to give BPS Excel mono a try. Probably isn't quite as tough as Big Game but handles a whole lot better.
