Question Time For Me to Stimulate the Economy?

My faithful 2014 Tahoe has an oil pan leak, a valve cover leak and a rear seal leak. Otherwise with 166,000 miles it runs great.
It would take me hours to fix my self because of all the stuff in the way of the valve covers and the oil pan that has to be removed. I look at my 76 Silverado and realize it would be an easy job. Simplicity rules!

Door 1. Get leaks fixed and hope to get another 25000 miles or more. Cost around $2500
Door 2. Buy a new or low mileage SUV or Truck for 45,000 to 70,000 with so much technology and crazy engineering that it will probably cause trouble in a year or so.
Door 3. Have the engine in my 76 Silverado rebuilt with a towing cam and about 340 hp. New heavy duty shocks etc. Around 15,000 to get in top shape as originally paint and upholstery are in good shape. At the end of the day I could easily work on it. It would have a chance to appreciate in value as opposed to watching $50,000 for a new one depreciate.

    Door 1..

most of the issues coming from today’s vehicles are stemming from the tech that’s included. Our 2021 Jeep only has 33k miles on it (we bought it used last year, we can’t afford new) and the PCM went out on it. Luckily it was covered under an extended warranty that people say is a waste of money. It will be $180 out of pocket for an over a $1000 repair.

at the same time, my 2019 Subaru had a brake sensor fault for a brief moment that shut my power steering down, along with traction control, ABS, and the anti collision system..

stick with what’s been reliable for you.

on the flip side, trucks aren’t getting cheaper, and will never get cheaper.. meanwhile the Tahoe may continue to depreciate so the difference between the trade in/private sale and a newer vehicle will continue to grow

Check your PCV system on the 2014 it may be your problem. If not, and if you change your oil like you should, you have shit luck. If it was me I'd see how bad the leaks are. if it's less than a quart in 1500 miles, and it isn't painting the back of your Tahoe, drive the damn thing like it is, it's cheaper.
Keep your 76. Get it rebuilt with a good Holly 4V F.I. system and new manifolds. I would not put a cam that promised 340 HP out of 350 C.I. I'd buy a towing cam that developed higher torque at lower R.P.M.
Since your 2014 hasn't eaten the lifters, it's a good motor. Enjoy it.

    I'd fix the Tahoe.
For me I'd do most of the work myself though.
I tow a lot and recently bought a 2024 Jeep with low miles and I actually like my old 12 year old Jeep better.
I do not like all the new technology.
The thought process for you is how much you drive and how far you drive.

I’d get a new truck/tahoe. You got your moneys worth out of that one.

Fix it. Make sure the leak isn’t from the oil sender or VLOM

Brand new vehicles depreciate as soon as they're driven off the lot,if that even concerns you.I'd fix the Tahoe also.

My 2010 Tahoe has 140k on it now. Has an oil leak also, usually a quart between changes. Getting ready to fix that and do a tune up, coils, wires and plugs, has never had a tune up so I figure it's time. Hope to get another 10 years out of it. I just put 8-10k miles a year or it so I think it will go another 10 years.

Door # 2, new vehicles are built like S#@* !
Door #3, if you have the funds and really like your Silverado

    I would do Door #1.

Plenty of money just get whatever you want. If you have my money you fix the one you have. I fix and keep everything I can because I am poor but if I was floating in cash I would get a new one and trade every 2-3 years and keep one under warranty.

I personally will fix mine until there’s nothing left to attach parts to. It seems way too many issues on new vehicles all brands across the board.

Thanks for the input. I think I will fix the Tahoe and leave the Silverado stock as it runs good and has only 76000 miles. Good for running around town.

Fix the Tahoe. I don’t see why you couldn’t get a least another 100k miles from it.

Now Dennis Sam Walden drove an old pickup tuck and Warren Buffet drives an old used car. There is a reason
