when I was in high school, I co'd with a guy who became more well-known, before I got my own stuff and started fishing on my own.
best advice was this. "Don't take up professional bass fishing".
I didn't listen, got into it through part of my 20's and up to about 31 or 2. Got wised up, realized it doesn't pay the bills unless you're one of the elite (rare), like a lot of other professional sports. And he was right, it takes your life over if you're serious. Took his advice and got out of it, and focused on drag racing which did pay the bills. And it was not a 24/7 job either, more like 24 hr 3 days a week and the other 4 days I could work a more relaxing job-which I still do.
Do I miss it? Yes and no. I can still fish when i want to but I have no inclination to target those ditch pickles specifically. If it'll eat, I'll catch it but I don't go out of my way for them anymore.
Never leave fish to find fish….specifically panfish. Anymore though, I’m not trying to catch that many anyway. I will only clean enough for one meal. So my my advice would be, don’t clean fish that you won’t eat today.
I used to tell my sons "I don't care how much you guys yap about video games, just keep your line in the water!"

This wasn’t direct advice but a great lesson nonetheless. There was a guy who lived about a mile down the road from us when I was a kid. He lived in a one room shotgun shack that you could see daylight through. He did not own a vehicle so walked everywhere he went. Dad and I would pick him up while he was out walking, carry him to the grocery store, and take him home afterwards. If he walked past our house he would always stop and visit if we were out in the yard. Real friendly guy. One day while I was out in the yard push mowing I saw him walking up in the yard. Noticed he had one shoe on his feet. I asked “Shorty (his nickname) did you lose a shoe?” He thought for a second and with a big, excited smile on his face replied “No, I found one”. Great lesson about attitude and perspective. I will never forget Mr. Shorty Peel.

Dont buy a boat, always depend on your buddy....![]()
Age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill !!
All baits catch fishermen, some catch fish. Problem is learning which is which. I have quite a few that I’ve never caught a thing on. Now I have lots of what works in the boat and none that don’t.

If professionals who's careers depend on catching fish use FFS then that's what I'm using. Might be too simple of a philosophy but makes sense to me.

If your going to make a small fortune fishing for a living
Start with a large Fortune
It's a hobby, Enjoy it
As soon as it becomes a job. There will be days you hate it.
Advice from dad: “if your early, your on time, if your on time your late, if your late, your in trouble.” Emphasized that to all the teams that I coached.
Older friend and very good fisherman. Told me, At the end of the day your boat is a tool for fishing. Take good care of it and make sure you maintain it and service it. But you can not be afraid to use it and it is going to get dings and scrapes and chips in the gel coat. Its a tool, would you buy a Snap-on ratchet and only use it on clean delicate easy jobs as it might get dirty or dinged up or you might wear out the ratchet using on dirty tougher jobs? Its a ratchet not a hammer so don't be stupid and do something you know will damage or break it. Its a Glass bass boat not a river rocket jet drive boat with HDPE armor on it, each tool is built for a purpose.
