    Evenrude 50HP not running well

I have an E50TSLECC that has recently developed issues running at idle. Barely idles even with the warmup lever lifted. Both plugs have good spark. (Tester tapped at about 1/4”, and still have spark.) The dark plug is from the top cylinder and the cleaner one from the lower cylinder. I have checked the VRO pump with a pressure/vacuum. Everything is as expected with one possible question. When I pressure test with my thumb covering the fuel output port and release my thumb, it is supposed to “click”. I get more of a twang. Is that normal?

I have not tested for oil flow. I don’t have a tank or test prop. Only muffs are an option. Can I test oil flow meaningfully with this situation?

Even at faster RPM I still have problems.

    Thanks,
    Terry

The spark should jump a 1/2 inch gap. The click you described would be normal. The air motor on the VRO pump emits an audible click as it cycles back and forth. How frequent is the click? At low speeds, idle the click will occur about every 30 seconds or longer. If the click is more frequent then there is an air leak on the suction side of the fuel line. Go here for a very good description on VRO operation http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html

otherwise back to basics. If spark is good at the bigger gap, start looking to fuel delivery. Maybe something in the main jet.

Disassembled and cleaned both carbs. Set the needle back where it was originally. Runs great on the muffs. Will need to wait and see how it runs on the lake in a few days. Btw, spark is a full half inch.

    thanks,
    Terry

You did use new gaskets and parts, correct? What measurements did you use to set the floats?

None of the parts were changed. The float was not removed, so no change. Remember this wax a tear down and reasssmble not a rebuild. I know I should have replaced the gaskets and slll that but I did not have anything to do that and I wanted to see if they were dirty. Apparently they were, I will likely redo this in a few days after I verify that they really are fixed.
