    new 200 merc

Looking at a new motor , the prices are close on a 200 V8 / V6. Re powering a 98 R-93 Ranger, I don't need to run 70 MPH anymore. I don`t know much about 4 strokes, which one would be the best choice ? Opinions from the forum would be appreciated. Thanks

I have a V8 225 hp. I’ve heard of no good reason from anyone to get the V6 unless you get a killer deal, meaning significantly cheaper. The V6 has less power and no other noticeable advantage, and the V8 has been out long enough to have a dependable track record. Mine was put into service in fall 2021 and has given me only one issue. A couple of years ago the gasket for the water pump housing split, allowing the engine to overheat, but only at idle. This gave me no grief—because I was inside the launch area when it happened—other than taking to the dealer for gasket replacement. At that time there was already a replacement gasket of a different construction, and I’ve had zero issues since.

Of those two choices get the Pro XS V8 for sure on a heavy Ranger. Propped correctly it will come out of the hole quickly and run about 65.

Just to throw out one more thought on propping, my dealer told me when I bought my first 4-stroke that instead of going directly to a 4-blade propeller, which I had run on my previous boats due to fishing big waters on the Great Lakes, I should give the 3-blade Fury a try. On my 2-stroke engines it was sometimes difficult to avoid cavitation in big waves or heavy chop, hence the 4-blade [I used Croxton Razor 4]. The dealer was right: seemingly the configuration of the 4-stroke ProXS is such that the 3-blade Fury holds the water very well. My $.01.

Most of our customers are running Fury and/or Tempest Plus on 19-22 ft bass rigs.

I have a 225 and get to 70. The small throttle body holds back the 200s and 225’s so it is hard to rev over 5800 rpms also

Broke the motor in Monday wit my prop off my old 200 (4 blade Trophy 24 P). OMG ! I have never felt torque like that. After I got the break in hours on it, I ran it up to 5500 at 61 MPH. I just ordered a Tempest plus, The installer tells me to put a 21P on it. That is what I'm going to try next. Did not like how the transom lifted with the 4 blade, the ride was not great. Had a porpoising issue as well.

I put a 21P Tempest plus on today, 6000 rpm at 63 mph.
then I put on a 23P Fury , 5600 at 65 mph. Had 420 lbs worth of people and 47 gals of gas and a load of tackle. Hole shot was great !boat handled good, except for when under 3500 rpm it porpoised bad. Don’t know how to address the porpoising, the prop shaft is 3 1/2” below the pad. Should I move the motor?
    thanks for any ideas.
