How to make a good round bad

I have a habit of doing this. Yesterday even par through 11 (2 birdies, 2 bogeys), here goes.

12th, par 5. Pull a drive into a tree line, but have a shot to get to about a 100 yards. Pull a 6 iron into a fairway bunker, pull got me just enough extra distance to roll into it. Come up short of green on 3rd shot, chip on, 2 putt for bogey.

13, par 4. Solid drive 120 to the pin, chunk it 90 yards. Chip on, 2 putt, bogey.

14, par 4. OK drive but a little short, have 170, hit a 6 iron, flush it with a touch of draw. Hit right in front of the green, kicks hard left down a hill next to the green. Chip and miss a 10’ for par.

15, par 3. 9 iron into the bunker, another bogey.

16-18 routine pars. What is frustrating is up until 12 had been hitting my irons solid, just went away for 4 holes, then on 16 comes back.

Guess that’s why golf is a 4 letter word! At least I feel better after venting.

I would love to shoot even par but likely I won't see that. Though I might not see it, my game is steadily improving and something I did in 2022 has been a life treasure. I learned to treat each shot as just that and let the bad ones go. Think DJ after a bad shot. Wish I could have done this 30 years prior instead of getting frustrated with myself. What this has done for me is allow me to start bad but potentially finish strong. That would not have happened in 2019; I would have spiraled downward.

Our emotions are the most difficult aspect of golf once our mechanics hit a certain point.

Working on my chipping lately, helped me save a few pars and chipped in for a couple of birds. At some point during a round, the putter or short game has to bail me out. If it doesn't I get frustrated.

I've embraced this as well. No matter how my full swing game improves, saving par is a core part of the game and actually takes pressure off the full swing. My putting is generally up for this challenge but my chips and pitches from 5 paces off the green is my weakness.

Depending on the situation, especially when short sided, even 15’ usually calls for the Texas Wedge (aka putter). Have gotten pretty good at it, Wednesday was anywhere from 3-10’ off the green Wednesday and got up and down each time. If it’s a longer distance I tend to hit a 6 or 7 irons and run it up.

I've accidently come across a deadly texas wedge:) In 2024, I went to an armlock putter to quiet aging hands. It helped. These putters have like 7 degrees of loft on them because we lean them forward on my lead arm and they are long.

Well, I discovered one day from the collar or on fairway, using the putter with a traditional grip and using as much length as i can that I can get almost putter like accuracy from paces off the surface and even with maybe 50ft to the hole. I used to try my 4h for this duty but the armlock without using the lean is incredible.

My problem is really in deep rough that are on mounds in some fashion to very unlevel greens with undulation. At this point, it just exceeds my skill. A flat green on a local muni and I'm better
