    New 250 Pro XS

Got home today with my brand new 250 pro xs (serial#1B736444) and I couldn't stand it I had to hook it up to the water hose to hear it in person. When I started the engine for the very first time it fired right up and ran great but I noticed it wasn't peeing water out of the back even after running for about 30 seconds so I shut the engine off and waited a few seconds and started it again but this time it started peeing right away. I let it sit there and run for maybe 2-3 minutes while watching the temp climb all the way to 204 degrees when the temp alarm went off and I shut it off immediately. I let it sit for a little while and went and started the engine again but this time it didn't pee any water and the temp got up to 204 again and the alarm went off so I shut the engine off and called it quits and plan to call my dealer tomorrow to see about bringing it back for them to look at. Just wanted to see if anyone has ever seen a brand new engine do this before and if so what ended up being the issue?

You can’t run these on the hose but a min and you have to tape up the low water pickups on front of the cone. Fill up a plastic tub or take it to the lake. Nothing wrong with the engine, hose can’t supply enough water, or the muffs leak to much.

I don't know why I didn't think about this. I had to do the same thing with my old 2 stroke but only ever ran it on the water hose a couple times. I appreciate the help.

I really don't mean to disappoint you, but that engine (1B736444) was sold new in February of 2009. It's also not a 4-stroke....

I'm guessing that is your old engine's serial number. On the new 250 ProXS 4-strokes, you can't use the ear muffs referenced by the part number above, and you MUST cover the nose inlets on the gearcase.

I strongly recommend a double-feed set of muffs, or BETTER YET, submerge the gearcase fully in water (like it is in the lake) for best results.

You are right that was my screw up due to me misreading the invoice. I think what im gonna try is getting a plastic 55 gallon barrel and cutting it in half and just filling it up with water and submerging the lower unit down in it as you recommended.

For a few minutes, as long as the entire gearcase is submersed in clean water.

Personally, I find it easier to do if the prop is removed (allows you to test shifting without instantly emptying the barrel).

This ^. I’d rather drive an hour to the lake, and it shouldn’t take that long in FLA, than monkey around finding a barrel, filling said barrel, maneuvering the lower unit into the barrel, and risk damaging the engine through insufficient cooling. But that’s just me.

Took it to the lake over the weekend and it did great. Getting close to finishing the break in and can start testing props to see what does the best.
