A weak motor would not push that boat 75mph. Could the motor break tomorrow? Possible but not probable. I bought a 2009 Legend in 2015. I did not look at a printout of the motor’s condition. Started good, sounded good and pushed the boat 70mph. Good enough for me. After owning the boat for nine years, the compressor bit the dust and I repowered it a 225 SHO.

Currently have a 2018 on my FX20. Runs great but like all motors, there are two types. Ones that are blown and ones that are about to. I have almost 240 hours on mine. Original powerhead.

I put 200 to 400 hours a year on my Suzuki on the Texas coast. You never see SHOs out here.... Grey Yamahas quite a bit. But Suzuki dominates the guide boat crowd out here. Some of these off shore charters put 100 hours a week in the summers.

An SHO is a bass boat motor so no wonder you don't see many on saltwater boats.

Actually Dad had one on a Parker Big Bay in Rockport. Saltwater only. And I see em rigged on a few bay boats. See a lot of them that guys want to buy the cheaper HP version and plan to get flashed to 330hp or whatever on the faster flats boats. But none that will see a lot of use was what i meant.... like bass boats lol.

2012 250 SHO in N. Idaho. It is kept in a shop-side lean-to, open air on both ends. For winter I just tip the motor down to drain it out. Maintenance always done every spring, ahead of schedule. Only non-ethanol premium for fuel w/ Ring Free. Warm it up on start up, usually gets a short cooldown when arriving at a fishing spot. 465 hrs, no problems. I've probably jinxed it now.

That was more true in the olden days but Yamaha now offers SHO models for larger boats.

Longer shaft lengths to accommodate deeper transoms. Transoms found on salt water boats.

Higher output alternator with dual output leads.

Ive got 292 hrs on a flashed 2016 200 SHO built May 2016. Flashed at 35 hrs. Put in service May 2017. No problems. Always serviced. Never needed to go to a Yamaha shop. Best motor I’ve ever owned.

I am at 204 hrs on my 250 SHO. I have not had one problem with it. I do change the oil twice a year and its been on the boat for 6 years. As small as those oil filters are its cheap insurance to keep fresh oil in her. My last 250 Hpdi lasted 14 years before she popped.

740 hours on my 250 SHO. Runs perfect. Going to trade it in on a new 2025 this Tuesday. I figured I am getting close and don't want to push too far. Been the best motor I have ever had by far and wide in 30 years!
