    Spindle sleeve replacement

If the spindle sleeve is not damaged and is still smooth, is it ok to leave it in place when doing a rear seal/bearing maintenance? If not, what is the best way to remove and replace with a new one?

Not necessary to r&r the wear sleeve for an ordinary wheel bearing maintenance. Replace the inner seal and give both seal and sleeve a good smear of grease on reassembly.

Mine looked fine. Replaced everything but the spindle sleeves in 2020. They started leaking one at a time. Replaced the sleeves and seals again and been fine since. I bought a Dremel cutting wheel. Don’t have a Dremel. Put it in a drill. Small cut and it popped right off. Made a pvc tool for driving new ones on.

Like I said above. I made a PVC tool to drive them on.

I used a short piece of iron pipe I found at the hardware store. I like the PVC pipe idea better though...less likely to ding the spindle.

I still don't see the need to replace a wear sleeve that is still in good condition. Two boats in 25 years, I've only replaced one and only because it was constantly blowing the inner seal on that side. The seal on that side is still the first to go, even after the sleeve replacement several years ago. No idea why.

could heat the wear sleeves up in a toaster oven by the axle and install quickly also likely? use some computer cleaner spray to shrink the spindle then through on the hot sleeve?

With my Shorelandr trailer the spindle sleeves are kept in place with Loctite #271 (24 hours to cure) and the grease seals are sized specificaly for the spindle wear sleeves. I would replace everything and use Lubrimatic Marine Trailer Wheel Bearing Grease, its Calcium Sulfonate based.

I put the sleeve in a cup of boiling water. Ice pack on the spindle. Worked

I used a cold wet rag around the spindle and a heat gun.

I’m about to replace all my wear sleeves after rebuilding each spindle a year ago, because I thought they all looked ok. I replaced the factory vault hub system with bearing buddies, and I knew I should have replaced the wear sleeves after seeing grease sling inside the wheel after overhaul (grease moved past rear seal and sleeve). Oh well; live and learn. I strongly suggest replacement.

I polish with super fine grit crocus cloth. If you cant see imperfections or catch a nail on an imperfection, it shouldn’t tear up a seal. More important to install the seal flush on the hub, grease between the seal lips prior to install, and make sure the seal runs perpendicular and fully on the sleeve.

I've used a piece of PVC and the inner bearing to install new sleeves. Start the sleeve by hand then put the old inner bearing on spindle and drive on with the PVC.

Any tips for removing a wear sleeve from the spindle?

I bought Dremel cut off wheel. Used it in a drill. Don’t own a Dremel. Only takes a little cut and then they pop off.
